Harbor Frieght.. small with some custom fixtures.. Friend of mine had made it.. Got the whole thing for $400...with all the extras.. I put the spare tire on along with new LED lights.. the Tire Rack and the box was already there.. Do a google search on Harbor Freight Tire Trailer.. if you were to build it. the trailers is about $350 or so. by itself..then customize it at will. thinking about putting a bike rack on the back to carry my bike instead of putting in between the tires and the box..

Hope that helps.

It most certainly did, I applaud and appreciate your efforts. That being said, have you run this idea past anyone at your DMV/DOT in KY. I'm interested to know that ordering one of your hitches (perfect for my needs) won't be something that I can't use.

If you use it who at the DMV is going to be inspecting it?

The State Patrol or any other law enforcement agency that happens to see it.

They would "see" it without inspecting it.

I used to run in the 4x4/rock crawling world and I fabricated tons of my own parts including bumpers with built in hitch receivers ect. Tons of highway patrol had seen it and I've never been questioned on any of that even when getting pulled over for speeding ect.

Either you're paranoid or just stoned.

Stop trolling. Just because you are willing to play against the rules, doesn't mean everyone is. If his design is DOT approved, he can make them for any vehicle equipped the way this car is equipped. I just hope that he gets a patent for the design.

DOT approval? I'm not sure if any trailer hitch companies go through DOT approval in the U.S. on their trailer hitches. I never saw anything about any DOT approval on my Kurt or UHaul hitches I've bought in the past.

My guess is if you take this hitch to your local DMV/DOT for "approval" you'll get one of these

Curt Class 1 - $144.00

Granted your design is easily removable, but this isn't a Harley. You have a right to some profit, but let's not be Corporate America. Unless you are talking about shipped.

If being 100% serious is trolling, than yes I'm trolling. Also thanks for just quoting one line from my whole post you troll.

It's then, not than. If you are 100% serious, you should try to be 100% correct. Thread derailed.

This man has a great idea and I'm just trying to point out the possible liability that could be imposed upon him. The legalities of the design could be incomprehensible should some idiot decide to pursue litigation after doing something stupid like breaking the rules. Granted, the idiot would lose, but the damage would be done.

For the record, I think he has a great design. As I don't know the strength factors of the area that he's bolting to, I (as a mechanical draftsman) have too be skeptical (paranoid if you prefer). Yes, the area in question was design with a specific pull out strength, but what about shear or bending moments?

It likely was not designed for shear strength at all. However the fact the each single hole was built to pull the entire wight of the car (and then some likely), using BOTH of these holes should provide enough shear for a pretty lightweight tire/tools trailer. If the trailer is loaded properly with most the the weight over the trailer axel I would be ridiculously surprised if a failure resulted from the use I described. My buddies autoX trailer he pulls with his Miata is under 500lbs loaded with a set of tires and all of his jack/stands/tools.

Also the seller could provide a disclaimer or something for the purchaser to sign to release liability. I would also say "for off road use only," which many automotive products used on the street are advertised as.

Anyway, I can't wait to order this once it goes on sale! It's gonna make traveling further for autoX a lot easier!!!

Lastly I'm sorry I'm NOT sorry for a simple grammar error. You correct everyone's grammar on the forum?!? Must keep you busy.
