This. I recently came across a mint gen 1 wrx wagon used for DD/grocery grabbing/soccer dropoffs and it has 250k on the clock.

They probably have no idea that someone on NASIOC would gladly give them 10k for it.

I don't think the weakest link is in our motors. There was a good post about the FA20 internals and most tune shops/mechanics say its pretty decent.

If you stay under 10psi, with a good tune, and cooling mods done, I think you will be fine for some time. All engine longevity suffers if you go FI, and I believe 50 ~ 60% faster wear and tear on stock components. If you expect to rebuild around the 50k mile mark, I think that is pretty good. At least that is my plan. Or you can wait till the stock motor blows up on the freeway with your pissed off SO.

Most of us knows that the rear axles are a weak point once the car is lowered, sticky tires, launching/drifting. And most FI'd 86's are lowered.

I was checking around craigslist in SoCal. Btw I only being this thorough because I'm not rich enough to have multiple cars and I am just trying to be thorough before I make an investment that shortens the life of my car.

You can pick up a decently reliable daily driver for less than the cost of a turbo kit. I picked up an old Honda Civic for a couple thousand as my backup car (it ain't pretty - but it works!), although I still end up daily driving my BRZ - lol.

Modding is about as fruitful an investment as being an investor in enron or Madoff.

Its always a pay to play game and always go into it expecting issues. Then on the occurrence of less than expected issues you have a chance at being pleasantly surprised.

A good rule of thumb is that if you can't buy the mods and be able to afford to fix what they may break without your spouse noticing the bank account hit than it shouldn't be done.

I would not call it an investment. If you want to make an investment in your car, then build a safe in it and place some CDs or savings bonds in there. I would say that the vast majority of forced induction owners probably have another form of transportation or are fine with their car being down for a weekend or a week should something go wrong.

Any reports of piston or ring land issues? I'm on e85 and a budget and thinking about running fullblown rods with oem pistons.

Not that I have heard of. Most of the failures have resulted in the rod making a window in the block.

Not that I have heard of. The Vortech canned tune only produces around 225 whp if I remember correctly, and at that power level and no knock the motor should last darn near forever.
