Do you have any proof of this? I don't feel any difference, and the general explanation has been that they don't work together.

Only the same type of proof you have. I've driven 3 different FRSs and noticed it in all 3 including my own. There are absolutely two different maps for the auto trans in manual mode. I suppose our driving patterns are different. In slow manual mode sometimes the shifts are so delayed I think it missed and have to do a second pull. Plus it limits the threshold of control over second gear and are locked out of downshifting into first.

And sometimes it's true! This is one of those times. They all go clickety-click, Jen. A noisy HPFP is normal for this car. Can you live with it? If it distresses you now, wait 'til it starts chirping. "Crickets," they call it. CRICKETS! LOL! I'm just fine with my crickets and I keep them well nourished with 93 octane fuel. Nobody's touching my fuel pump, thank you. It works just fine, and I expect it to continue to do so for the duration of my ownership. Clickety, click, click. But that's me. Do some reading, and learn about the traits of modern fuel pumps designed to meet the extremely high pressures of direct injection fuel systems; they're different from the old-style pumps you may be accustomed to. It is my understanding that a number of other auto manufacturers employ the same or similar pump; it's not designed and made by Subaru or Toyota as I understand it. The same pump, or something quite similar is employed in other cars as well, and presumably they tick loudly in those applications as well. The only time I notice my ticking HPFP is when parked with the hood up and my head in the engine compartment. I don't hear it when I'm driving. I have yet to read of a single HPFP failure, not one, that could be attributed to the inherent ticking and chirping. It's just the way this pump has been designed. Again, I know of NO FAILURES arising from this design and its noisiness. Have you found any evidence of failures, Jen? There are reasons I would consider avoiding a 2013, and maybe a 2014 twin, but the noisy traits of the HPFP are not one of them. Read about injector seal failures and subsequent total engine failure, and possible connecting rod bearing failures(?). Some engines have self-destructed. Crickets? Ehhh.. that's not a knoife. Engines blowing up? Now that's a KNOIFE! (From Crocodile Dundee.) In defense of the twins, I would note that the blown engines are few in number relative to how many are on the road. And it's disconcerting that we still lack a satisfactory explanation for those failures. Will my engine blow up? I sure hope not. I wouldn't like that. After it was repaired, I'd feel compelled to sell it immediately, since word is that they are unlikely to warranty it for a second time. Who knows? Anyway, Jen, you and your husband's concerns about the fuel pump are understandable, but misguided, born out of simply being uninformed about these modern pumps and their "normal characteristics." I suggest that you set this concern aside, and focus instead on other issues. Maybe reconsider purchasing that car you just test drove? Quote:
Let's say you just want to pull the plugs to gap them or swap them for something different. Go and see what's required. You won't believe your "ears." Come back and tell us what you think. |

I've read enough of the cricket thread that there is no way I'm going near this thing, as much as I love the car. I have a parking lot full of cars with random issues. I can't deal with another one. Hopefully they will fix the issues with this car. The fuel pump seems to be part of a list of issues.

I'm selling my projects. My goal is to have a reliable daily driver, and a "fun" car. I would like a new one without issues. Man, I really like the FRS. Ugh.

That's how I ended up with the FR-S. BMW was a nightmare (even though I want one more than the FR-S tbh), same with Mercedes's electronics. |
