When shifting to 2nd hold the clutch and let the revs drop a bit longer than usual. I found that i can get butter smooth transition from 1st to 2nd by doing this.

Smoothly as in changing the shift knob to 2nd position? Or engaging the clutch in 2nd?

You just gotta jam it in there with force. I do find that once she's warm and parts are lubed up, it slides in easier.

Hello there,

Just picked up my new BRZ on Tuesday. (Traded in my MT Limited Impreza)

I too find the 1st to 2nd gear shift tight/notchy. Interesting to note that the downshift from 3rd to 2nd is smooth............Kliph

This works sometimes for me when my transmission is still not warm.

Once everything is warmed up, it shifts smooth almost every time. But my car has 11,000 miles and Motul 300 in the transmission, so that helps.

Just FYI, it's not really the engineers' recommendation more than it's the legal team's recommendation. They don't really consult us or care about us engineers after we've delivered the product. They have technical writers and legal to deal with all the book mumbo-jumbo.

This. Lawyers write/have more say in what goes in the owners manuals than anyone else.

Glad to find the 2nd gear issue should get better with age. I find it odd too that 2nd gear is a little rough. I'm only at about 300 miles though!

A few things to keep in mind:

* Our car is a "sports" car, which means it inherently drives a little differently than the average car.
* If you got yours with any extras, like the TRD Cold-Air Intake, that supposedly delays the throttle response a little.
* Cold weather makes a BIG difference when the car isn't warmed up yet
* Read this thread about changing your transmission fluid ASAP...http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46208

I have similar shifting issues as well, but it's getting better and I can't say whether that's more because I'm adjusting to my car or if it's breaking in (I about to hit 500 miles on it as well).

Don't worry, it'll get better!

Takes some breaking in. I'd also recommend an aftermarket rear shifter bushing, heavy shift knob, and mtec springs.

Also, rev-matching when downshifting into 2nd will make it easier.
