As Brother Ray (that's Ray Charles, for you young 'uns) said: "But on the other hand, baby....." - things are worth what they're worth when they're worth it.

I bought a new '13 last month at $1k off plus an extra year of free service & roadside assistance. If they'd had a '14 exactly as I wanted it, I'd have taken it instead - but they didn't. I wanted a black base car and I got it. We keep our cars for 8 to 10 years (I traded an 8 year old 350Z, and my wife's car is in its 10th year). There were no other cars to consider - I wanted a small, good looking, agile car with personality, a real spare, and a trunk that'll hold my guitar, amp head, Mesa Boogie cab and a gear bag without needing a shoehorn.

It's spring and I wanted a new car. I found exactly what I wanted and needed. I love it, and wasting weeks pursuing a lower price just didn't seem to be worth the hassle. When I sell or trade it in 8 to 10 years, the extra year of depreciation might have added $100 a year to my total cost of ownership.

PS: Road & Track's on the mark about the sales staff. Steve was actually better than average, as he only got 2 really important things wrong: no, all Toyotas do NOT run fine on 87, and the USB port is not also a connection to the system (at least on my car, unless I'm missing something - I still have to use BT for audio). And I wasted a half hour of my day "just saying no" to the add-on cr@p.

After the first 86, dealers thought they had the prized pony and everything was listed more than MSRP. Some suckers paid the price anyway and it perpetuated the issue. Once the average buyer got onto negotiating and shopping around prices were being negotiated and incetives added, but it was too late for the initial rush that would have caused long-term sell-outs. If at the beginning you could get the same ratio of reduction as any other car, they could have upped the price for 2014 to make up for it. They simply had too much inventory when 2014 production started.

I just looked in a 500 mile radius of me there are 100 "marked as new" 2013 BRZs for sale and 1100 FR-S are listed. Granted some are duplicate entries and some are dealer demos marked as "new" but with 6k+ miles on them. Shameful.

Think how easy it is to list someone you "spotted" and how "rare" it is to see one of these cars on the road. If the 2013s were out on the road at $2500 and $3500 reductions, they would bring in new customers. I've said it before and I'll say it again...someone in marketing needs to be fired over at the 86 project. I mean when was the last time you saw the commercial for this car? I haven't seen it since the first 6 months; I heard at least 3 Camry commercials on my way into work today.

This past weekend I saw a brand new FR-S commercial a few times on TV, but I can't remember which network. It was the "Epic" theme that they are focusing on in the main page of the scion.com site. Honestly, my first thought was "awe man, now everyone is gonna get one!" I kind of like the fact that there are only a handful around here.

I looked on youtube for the commercial but couldn't find it.

I got my '13 FR-S for $1500 off of sticker about a month ago. Was stickered at a little over $26K and paid a little over $24.5K before TTTs.

In my search to buy I found three problems:

1: In this area it seems the cars sold well enough during the summer, enough for some dealer to get an extra allocation. So the dealers got 8 cars instead of 7 in their second shipment. Trouble was the extra allocations came on to the lots in late summer/early fall and people stopped buying them for winter.

2: People are buying these cars w/o understanding them. After the 'honeymoon period' they discover its not the car for them and they trade it back in. This leads to several dealers having a CPO car on their lots with about 6K on the odometer and only a $2k price reduction.

3: The dealers aren't that interested in the product. They were eager to sell them when they were hot and new in June 2012, but they've found that the poeple that really want the cars know more about it than the salesman do. (That's the case with most tunner cars anyway.)

I've visited 6 dealers. Two were Subaru dealers only allocated one car at a time. The next Subie dealer had two new '14s and a CPO 13. Another Subie dealer had 4 new '14s, 2 new 13's ($4,500 off) and a CPO. A Toytoa/Scion dealer had one new '13 A/T full price. The second Toyota/Scion dealer had 4 new '13s and a CPO '13.

Bottom line: The Manufacturer needs to advertise the cars to maintain interest, and the sales people need to know the facts or just shut up. Nobody should be paying MSRP on a NEW 2013 right now.

My 10 Series was marked $28,180 and I got it for $24,180... The dealers that are smart about these cars are willing to deal!

The 2013 models kept getting produced well into the later half of 2013 when most other manufacturer's switched over to 2014.

You could say the 10 series could've (and probably should've) been released as a 2014 model.

Are you using an android? Both mine and my buddies frs' will play my iPhones music through the radio using the USB, and allows switching through the head unit, however his android will not play in either of our cars

I have an iPhone. But I just realized that because I'm streaming FLAC files from my home server, I'm using a different renderer (I have Serve-to-Me and Stream-to-Me on my phone and home server). I'll try using the internal player in the iPhone on my way home and see if that works via USB. Thanks!

Each dealer does there own thing and I they need to get those 13s off the lot quickly now if there are any left. All I see hear are under-educated salesmen and poor marketing.

And that's the answer. My iPhone shows as an iPod via USB and works fine with the internal player. But to play Stream-to-Me or Tonido through the system, I have to connect with BT even when also connected via USB.
