How long do you warm up car before driving?

I gotta admit I don't wait that long. Usually when the temp needle start to reach first line, I will start driving. How about you guys?

I wait until the idle drops before putting it into reverse and backing out of my garage. I live on a short gravel road (0.7 mile) and keep my speed under 15 mph to prevent slinging gravel and chipping my paint. By the time I reach the highway the car water temp is halfway to the normal operating temp.

There is a point where the tone of the engine changes. It's not too long. (it's the idle dropping as stated above...)
Mostly I am waiting for the oil to get pumped to the valves. Then I take it easy for a bit till it's warmed up proper.

I've read around and many posted that with modern engines, long warm up is not required anymore - 30 seconds to 1 minute would do? Not sure if this applies to boxer engine though.

0 seconds. I get in, crank, and ride. By the time to get to the bottom of my driveway the "fast idle" is gone. And I drive like I stole it

As much as that sounds like YOLO, you are basically running in safe mode by doing that.

Unless it's really cold (which happens very rarely in my area), I drive right away. However, my city has potholes bigger than my car and places where the road has floated in floods and settled like an offroad course. At that point I'm more concerned with the underside of the car than the engine. So I take it very easy getting out of my neighborhood, and by the time I hit the main road my water and oil temps have come up a bit. Then I usually keep it below 4000 RPM until my water temp hits about 160° or 170°.

This car warms up fast, and modern cars don't need to be warmed up the way older ones did. As long as you're not romping on it or live in an arctic environment, it doesn't really need an extended warm up.

No warm up period for me either. Roughly speaking, my basic rules:

- Cold start: Drive right away keeping RPMs at/under 3000 rpm
- Coolant temp halfway to normal: 4000 rpm
- Coolant temp normal: 5000 rpm
- 5 minutes after coolant temp normal: redline

As some others have said, I sometimes wait until the engine tone changes. Other times, I just drive it slow until I know the engine has warmed up a bit.

If it's really cold I wait until the needle moves, otherwise until the engine sounds like it is ready, a description which would sound ridiculous to anyone who doesn't drive one of these but makes perfect sense to someone who does. No beating on it until it's up to temp.
