Sounding like a diesel at idle?

Anyone else having this issue? Not appealing at all, get the feeling it's not supposed to sound like that but feel like it may just be because of the sound tube letting me hear more of what's going on under the hood. Nonetheless it's still very clunky sounding. Doesn't help that the crickets decide to chirp in once in a while lately making it a gaddamn orchestra of bad sounds.

Any thoughts or relation?

Thanks

with the clutch out especially, idling when fully warmed up, with no sound tube, i still find it is noisy, compared to my other 4 cylinder sports cars I have owned. Lots of ticking and clanking from the engine bay that makes its way into the cabin, above and beyond the occasional crickets.

Shouldn't sound like a diesel at idle unless you're idling at like 300rpm.... hahaha. The only time I get a diesel like sound is when the engine is being lugged, and it's the sound of the DI ramming fuel in.

No way does it sound like a diesel, not even a modern diesel. Having said that, they are not the quietest or most refined sounding engines around.

Mine sounds like a mixture of clicking going back and forth.

I have this sound too. It's the throwout bearing. When you push in the clutch, it goes away.

I think what's being described here is the clacking sound of the direct injectors. It doesn't sound exactly like a diesel, but it is noisy.

But that's normal.

This. I would actually argue that some diesels are quieter than our cars.

Direct injection engines tend to be noisy. Also, our cars are performance cars, not luxury or commuter econo-boxes, so you'll hear more noises than you're probably accustomed to.

I had a 2010 Golf TDI, it didn't sound like a diesel and neither does my BRZ.

I know what you mean by the diesel sound, its the Direct injection clacking away at idle and the throw out bearing for the clutch rattling. I wouldn't call it a diesel sound but its a noisy clack for sure. Unfortunate sound but that's how she's built.

The reason people refer to it as a "diesel" sound is that there really isn't anything else to compare it to except direct injection. And if you don't know what direct injection sounds like, the closest thing that comes to mind is sorta-like-diesel-but-not-really.

That's strange, I often find myself looking at the RPM to see if the car is still on if I have parked for a bit before getting out.
