There are black boxes, but I'm pretty sure they cannot be used for insurance purposes in the USA. Evidence for criminal cases, or recall data is fine I believe.

Ouch. If there is such a thing I'm almost certain it can and will be used by insurance companies in Norway. I guess it's physically inside the ECU or something, very hard to yank out or disable?

Well if the data is used for criminal cases/police report, then I think the insurance companies can have access to it.

But for low speed fender benders when the police are not involved, like the OP's case, then in that case I do believe the insurance company would have a difficult time getting that data.
