Fuel pump running when the car is off?

I sit in my car to listen to the radio or read a book while I eat lunch, and on occasion I will hear humming from the dash, and other times I will hear humming from the trunk. I got out today slid under the back of the car and am pretty sure it is the fuel pump running, but the car is turned completely off. I don't even have the key in the ignition. It will run for over a minute, I don't know exactly how long it goes, because I usually get annoyed and I turn the key on to acc+, then back off to make it stop. All I can think is that it is keeping the fuel system pressurized. Anybody have any idea?

Normal. Search or read the manual.

It says on for a while, I've noticed just sitting in the car finishing a phone conversation with the car off. *shrugs* nothing wrong.

It may be the purge pump you hear running (fuel evaporation leakage check).

Quite normal.

searched before I posted, doesn't show anything related unless it's farther down the list then I looked. I read manual first day I bought the car, I never saw anything about the fuel pump running when the car is not in operation.
I never said it wasn't normal, Just not sure why it was doing it.

I did not know there was a pump for that, but then again I am used to a carbon canister working off of vacuum lines and solenoids, and only working with the car running. I have no clue how this one is setup.
Thanks.

Straight from the manual.

Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound
coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel
evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction.

My car and my wife's Prius were both "talking" to each other in the garage the other night....

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet, but it's the fuel evaporation leakage check.

Also for those of us who have the starting issue, turning on Accessory gets the pump primed and allows for first time starts. When I just turned the key all the way without waiting at ACC position for a few heartbeats, my car would not reliably start.

I appreciate it, I'll have to read it again when I get home to see I can find it.

http://techinfo.subaru.com/proxy/712...316DSTIS_2.pdf

Just go read the PDF version of the manual on Subaru.com... I'm sure there is the same thing on scion.com
