Well the dealership is in contact with Subaru of America and they seem to be leaning towards warranty. The pieces are from the right valve cover of the engine but they don't know how deep the damage goes. They will know more around noon tomorrow.

You really should alter the title of this thread. Dead battery is not involved and is misleading. Meaning people may not be reading it because of the title. Your issue is certainly more interesting than I expected from the title . Hope it works out.

I do understand what you're saying(my brother's Jeep Cherokee oil gets dark quick after a change) but I don't see how it would be a 'misconception' with this car. Why would my car(or anybody else's) be different than his? How it's driven? The brand/type of oil? Mine has never gotten near that dark.

What he's saying is it's a misconception in general that the color of used oil denotes its level of wear. Your oil not being as dark as his oil has nothing to do with anything.

Who's to say you use the same brand of oil and filter as him? Who's to say you have the same number of miles as he? Who's to say you live in the same weather conditions as he (Alabama and New Hampshire don't share the same weather conditions last I checked)?

The only thing oil color should be used for is if you paid someone and you want to verify that the work was actually done prior to driving off. Other than that, no used oil that was driven on for even half a cycle interval will drain the same color as it did when it was poured.

The only good way to determine the condition of used oil is a UOA.

Well they are not sure how I did the damage to my engine. They questioned my story today when I talked to them and I apparently put the camshafts/other parts through the side of my engine. They did say that I could get pictures of the damage next week.

Well good news is that no reasonable person could pin valve train issues on your mods.

Unless your drain plug ran you low on oil.

The point that someone was making was that oil at 100 miles will look very similar to oil at 1000+ miles, and neither will look like it did when it was poured in.

Oil with ANY use will be darker than virgin oil, that's why colour isn't a good indication of how much life is left.

What's the point you're attempting to make?

One is a used oil and the other isn't. Furthermore, they're both different brands of oil.

Oil color has nothing to do with amount of wear. Used oil will not be the same color as when it was poured.
