I think that getting better than 30 highway with the manual will be easy enough. |

Now I'm more then ever interested in seeing a manual vs. automatic comparison test. Based on these numbers I think the gearing of the automatic might completely ruin the car.

Yeah, me too. But being that this car was engineered by Subaru, who has a top-notch safety rating, I'm almost 100% confident that this car will get 5-star crash test ratings all around. Having 6 airbags should help a lot too.

Totally different cars if you ask me. You shouldn't be surprised there, one is a sporty compact, the other is a sports car. The overall drive experience will be quite different. Not terrible numbers either for a "sports car", my buddy has a MS3 and he's getting RAPED on gas...not to mention STI owners, RX8 owners, WRX owners, etc. The civic SI is comparable mpg too.

Yea, but iirc 05 legacy didn't fare well in initial testing due to improperly installed side airbags, which wasn't discovered before crash-tests.

1. Many of today’s newer autos are dual clutch, which means they are essentially manual transmissions shifted automatically. No more torque converters to increase drivetrain loss.
2. Almost every auto is geared lower on the highway than their automatic counterpart, which decreases pumping losses and increases fuel mileage. 3. With more gears spaced closer together, an automatic transmission can better manage its engine’s torque curve. 4. As already mentioned, it seems the EPA assumes manual transmission drivers use improper shift points (rev too high) for maximum city fuel mileage. The autos can be programmed to use lower shift points and therefore get better fuel mileage than the manual. Experience shows that an intelligent manual transmission driver can select ideal shift points and get the same if not superior MPG than an auto in the city. 5. A 7-speed manual transmission would probably suit our cars very well and make it more fuel efficient than the auto. |

I want to know the gearing for the auto and manual...makes me wonder how much of a penalty the auto will have in terms of acceleration due to the pronounced disparity in fuel economy numbers....

I've been in BMW's where, if you come to a stop and put the car in neutral, and take your foot off the clutch the engine stops. It restarts when you depress the clutch pedal again. My thinking is this: If I want to shut off the engine while sitting, I can turn the key and do it myself. I wonder how others on the forum feel about this? |
