First model year of a car with a new motor, new transmission, and new platform...as others have said, problems with be inevitable.

*The first year cars that don't have design, assembly, or production issues usually have carry-over motors/transmissions/platforms OR their issues are quietly dealt with via part number changes, tsb's, subtle production tweaks, and subsequent model year revisions.

But who cares, the FRS is the first car I've even considered getting in its first year (I'm sure the problems will be minor).

IS300 aka Toyota Altezza were started in 1998 in Japan... 2001 is not a first year model. But still an amazing car, had one too

Many will likely say the FR-S/BRZ needs more power and while more wouldn’t hurt, those folks (the same ones who have probably never driven on a track) are missing the point.

Don't void your warranty in the first year or two, and you should be fine. Any issues found will be given updates or recalls fairly quickly, I'm sure.

I'll be a victim of self-induced accelerated tire wear

i expect after the first 500 miles the blowjobs im getting due to racecar will start to increase as i mod it. I expect full compensation for my blown engine after 500 miles because repeated full clutch in and full throttle in.
