And this is why I will never park a car I care about on the street again. Off-street parking, garage, or bust.
Shitty luck OP, sorry.

I reckon that's gonna be written off, even without being able to see the pics (damn office proxy).
Just from the words used here: Bent axle, C-pillar damage... that's likely to have hurt the chassis quite a bit, making it expensive. |

I imagine that body shops would rather generate work for itself and give an estimate that's below the threshold to consider a car totaled. Whether your car is the "same" afterwards or not is not really their concern. i.e. $19,000 = totaled = $0 for body shop. $17,500 = not totaled = Some $$$ for body shop.
I know at least in some states you are entitled to get your own estimates and the insurance company *must* allow you to get it repaired wherever you want. Do not let the insurance company lure you into one of their "preferred" body shops with the promise of a speedy repair and processing of paperwork. They're in it to save themselves money. Getting your car fixed for as little as possible is their #1 priority. Take it to the most expensive body shop you can possibly imagine. Places that only work on luxury imports and such. Get that estimate high enough so that the insurance company is forced to total it. Prepare to be f*&$ked with by the insurance company though. Delays, being put on hold forever etc. etc. Get a lawyer. One phone call from them and stuff happens fast. IMO, it's worth the cost in legal fees to get what's right. $12,000 repair + car that never feels right <<<< $19,000 - $1,500 (legal fees) - $5000 out of pocket for a brand new car. They wanted me to take the car to a Geico-certified repair yard and then I flipped the script and got them to take it to a local shop that I hand-picked. Should get the estimate tomorrow.. we'll keep you guys posted. |

We had an FRS come into the shop with the entire rear end in the front seat..it takes about 15000 to total them. Also depending on the insurance company paying for it and the production date of your car also says weather they are going to put crappy A/M stuff on. They are only supposed to write what they see and once they disassemble the vehicle will you have a better idea of exactly how much damage there is.. obviously.

and you can always specify oem parts for the repair.. no reason to be stuck with crappy a/m parts..

It depends on insurance, the fine print on most say if it's a year or older A/M parts will be used unless no part is available then LKQ (like, kind, quality) is used, if that doesnt work THEN OEM is used. Statefarm is the only insurance company that will not use aftermarket parts on any year vehicle unless absolutely necessary. USAA it's no a/m unless 2+ years...others the cheaper the better.
