I am surprised BRZ sales are up so high year over year factoring in this brutal winter, but the volume is still low. |

The demand for the BRZ is the same (maybe more) than the FRS but the supply is less so it makes sense that the BRZ sales are still good despite the recent unfortunate winter weather.
However there is no lack of supply for the FRS and they moved at greater numbers since birth vs the BRZ but I think the sales of a rwd sports car naturally would slump in the two months half the country was literally "taken by storm". I wonder too, considering the options (or lack thereof), how much the $25k price tag plays into this as well.

I don't agree with this at all first the Elise, the ultimate sports car was basically a toyota with a lotus chasis/Toyota powertrain (in 2005 about same new price as the S2K) and we had the Toyota MRS. A 22000 lbs wonder of engineering with a lucky few tossing the Toyota/Celeca/Lotus/Matrix 2ZZ in it to own a 5 second 2200 lb Toyota sports car for well under $15 grand. And a 2ZZ MRS is a true sports car not an over weight underpowered semi GT. sports cars were always sold to be modified. If we want to take things further if you could find a nice S14/S15, for $3k you could import a SR20DET front end and have one hell of a car. The 2000's Honda offered an over weight over priced engineered luxury convertible. The examples in the paragraphs above were what the true sports car drivers were doing. I even prefer a plain stock MR-S over the S2k and new/stock means little. Honda performance died in 1999 with he the DC2/Civic Si and the platform's double-wishbone suspension.

I never expected Hyundai to come out with a RWD sports coupe and they didn't do half bad with the Genesis other than its size and crap gearbox...at least the 2.0 as it is well balanced. Hopefully they will get serious about the PassoCorto concept and learn from the Genesis Coupe's shortfalls!

The thing I always liked about Honda and Toyota was access/serviceability. Also much better than German cars in that regard. Basic terms the Japanese cars came apart in separate, so you only had to replace the bad part. German cars you would have to buy tools too expensive to do the job yourself. Just looking at the FRZ fairly looks straightfoward to work on, only isssue is pulling the engine for some things but its a much easier pull than fwd cars. The Di looks to be the biggest PITA.

It is interesting the BRZ sales are still going up year over year while the FR-S sales are going down. I can think of a couple possible reasons for that:
- More Subaru dealership traffic - More mature buyers as sales stabilize - leads to more sales of the more expensive version over the entry level Any other ideas? |

Wasted some time and made these charts because I was interested in seeing if there were any obvious things going on. It looks like their sales are pretty steady, with perhaps of late an increase in BRZ sales and a decline in FRS, but it may just be that there was a surge in sales in the summer and this is coming off that surge.
This is based off of the OP's figures. So thank you very much for the data OP! |
