This happened to me in my brz once. And when I called up the text on my phone after I'd pulled over, I looked at the text and it wasn't even lazily typed. The voice synth was simply just that bad at pronouncing it, despite the voice being about as nice as Siri's.

Yeah, no thanks. I'd have been less distracted if the text had popped up prominently onto the headunit screen AS text. It'd have taken less time for me to read it at a glance than I spent trying to decipher the garble that text-2-speech on the HU had made of it.

Also notice that neither Toyota, Subaru, OR Toyota subsidiaries Scion or Lexus are mentioned as being platforms for Apple's Carplay. Apple isn't selling this to automobile owners, but to automobile manufacturers as OEM or OEM option equipment, and it looks like our vehicle's parents are excluded from the list at least for now.

Does look like I was wrong about slowness of response, if Apple is using the airplay protocol as the basis for the carplay interaction. Airplay actually is fairly responsive, unlike mirrorlink.
Toyota is listed as a future platform, though. The Siri Eyes Free already shows up in Lexus models. It is safe to say that this will end up in Toyotas soon. I don't know about Subaru and Scion, though.

Not really related to the twins, but a fair number of us have other Toyotas in the household. Toyota just rolled out their latest and greatest head units in the fall of '13. With IOS in the Car a known prior to that, hopefully, there was some planning with the current head units and not just whatever will replace the current head units. I'd love there to be an update that basically works along side my Entune in our '14 Rav4 to allow CarPlay. The functionality of the unit in our Rav isn't bad (it will use voice commands to enter navigation, search POIs, play songs, etc), but some of the maps are already out of date, I'm sure POIs are way out of date, and it just doesn't look as nice as the carplay screens. It isn't quite as user friendly as it could be.

CarPlay runs on QNX, which is owned by BlackBerry - the more you know

Apple sells a car headunit with a cd drive, but they don't have cd drives in their laptops anymore? What is this

I really don't want to give up my simple base-model head unit, but I would really like a Google Maps built in nav.

Sounds like this will be backwards compatible to some older vehicles. Mercedes specifically mentioned it.

You're still going to get better functionality from iOS and Android phones through a new NEX unit from Pioneer than from this.

AND, they're not selling to you. They're selling vehicle-specific OEM option HU's. Good luck getting one if your model isn't on the supported list.

in theory, getting one wouldn't be a problem it'd be the exorbitant price of an oem unit, and then just figuring out the connections..

Seems like a good idea. A better idea than Ford dropping Windows and moving to Blackberry. Simplicity is key, most Apple IOS is, I'm on board

I know that they are not selling head units...

I wasn't really talking about the FR-S... just car play in general. I don't even have an FR-S yet, but my Rav4 has the just released Toyota units, so if car play were to roll out on Toyotas later this year, I'd be very happy have an update on my Rav to allow me to use car play. With the way Scion does their head units, we really don't know if/when it will be available on the twins.

Looks like there's an iPhone update tonight. Read the details and it says that it includes CarPlay.
EDIT: Nvm. Looks like 7.1 was available a while back. Guess I'm the last person on Earth to update their phone.

As far as stock systems go, Audi by far has the best MMI set ups I have ever used. I'm an Audi tech m just finished training on the new MMI. it will have 4g LTE hotspot, Google earth nav, 64gb ssd hard drive and a wheel to navigate with on the center console with the top of it doubling as a gesture pad to write out numbers or letters for addresses or phone numbers.
I'd be interested to see what sort of outputs and expandability an apple headunit would have though.

Here is the most recent update regarding CarPlay. It looks like certain Pioneer systems will be able to run it after a firmware upgrade simply by plugging your iPhone into the head unit. Here is an article on Gizmodo that goes into a little bit more detail:

Looks like Alpine is wanting to do this. Clarion is considering it too.
