a rubber glove has been a great help to give me enough extra grip to remove stubborn filters by hand

My "hand tight" is exactly the procedure that is outlined in the FSM, marked on the filter, etc.

Screw on filter. Once rubber base touches engine, turn another 2/3 to 3/4. This can be accomplished by hand.

There is absolutely no need to turn the filter 1.5 full rotations. Please show me where it says to screw on the filter that tightly.

Edit: torque spec for the filter is 10ft-lb of torque.

If that is not a definition of "hand tight", you're doing it wrong!

there is no definition of hand tight.. which is exactly what I was stating.. even the FSM clearly states rotate an extra 3/4 .. which is my point..

I've used a giant set of channel locks in the past, but I like this screwdriver method...

All filters gaskets have that coating, it is definitely not grease meant for aiding in a proper seal and protecting the gasket. I don't have an old box at my disposal but many say to add some engine oil to the gasket so it won't bind and fold against the sealing surface.

That same coating is even on fuel filter gaskets which I normally wet the surface with a bit of fuel when installing them.

I learned by lesson with my Legacy GT, let the dealer do the first oil change. The oil filter and the drain plugs were probably installed by gorillas.

I used one of these now to get filters loose.

not all... look at the filters at an average auto parts store.

The "grease" is why OEM filters are of a higher cost, they are shipped with a packing grease.

... but having said that, all FSM (Toyota/Subaru) specify to use oil to lube up the gasket.

FWIW.
