There's more to the global market than just Europe and North America. There's also Asia, which is probably selling well, too (I hope).
Though I bet they could get a leg up in Europe if they did a 2.0L FD20 (FA20 diesel) turbo with similar power numbers but increased fuel economy. Seems that when North America won't get the diesel version of some Asian car, Europe does get it. With their fuel prices, a diesel 86 would be competitive in the market its intended to be in, not with much more powerful, better handling German sports cars.

Writing from Australia here. Funny we had this topic in one of the Aus forums and they were saying this car is actually not selling well in US due to how cheap cars in US and there are just so many alternatives for nice cars at (or close to) FRS price range.
It does very well here because for once it's not ridiculously overpriced like the rest of the cars here. Base variant starts from Aud 30,000 drive away here. I paid AU $41,500 for GTS (equals to monogram there?) But honestly if I have this money to spend in US I would have lots of cars to consider. But I still think they should just market the car as Toyota in US, not Scion. Don't know why they did that. 86 is a well known line and supposedly to be the successor of AE86, why changed it to Scion FRS. |

Calm down folks. Toyota (Subaru) isn't going to stop making this car for some time. I still see people turn and look, and look again. They never made a 4-door Camaro and Toyota was just teasing. Nobody wants a 4-door FR-S. Convertible? Well maybe.
If any of you noticed that FT-1 concept - the roofline in particular - I say Supra. And that inline 6 will fit nicely. I can't wait. FR-S is here to stay. |

This doesnt sound right....Nissan moved pretty quickly to get the IDX concept out after seeing how many of the frs/brz sold the first year. 40k units for a sports coupe in one year us pretty impressive.

Maybe they consider fleet sales? It seems to be working for the Mustang and the Camaro.
Maybe Toyota should hire Michael Bay to make another product placement movie with their cars.

It was pretty hyped by Jalopnik and similar websites, and Toyota said they would like to build one. Subaru said it would take too many resources to make the changes needed, so Toyota has been looking into doing it on their own. That was the last word about it that I saw.

I think z4 is pretty close... well at least much closer than the gap here.
In Australia, cheapest Z4 is around US$79,000. Which is completely ridiculous. They can charge this much because people still buy it, really. Or did you mean Nissan Z? If so, I think Nissan Z is like 15k or 20k more expensive here if I remember correctly. I'm also not saying that 86 is a flop in US as I also don't know where that article get their info from.... Wishful thinking but I think if they changed the FA20 so it doesn't try to meet all those stupid euro regs we could have a 250 hp 2L for the USA and Asia.
The thought of a diesel GT-86 is funny to me, would rev like shit but would cruise around with high low end torque and still have some punch when you need it. That would be one odd-ball car. Europeans might like it.

I would love to know how you would get 250 hp out of a 2 liter engine reliably without FI, unless that's what you meant.
