The refresh for this car and siblings will not be a turbo car. That is not what this car was intended, nor made for. This car was made for lightweight, snappy performance on instant tap. I can see the refresh being a 230-240 hp STi or TRD version with a larger exhaust, stickier tires, a tighter suspension, tune and compete with the S2K. A turbo 86 would not compete with any subaru lineup, since thats what subaru has been doing for years, turbo H4's.
As soon as the refresh model shows up, it will take its place probably just under the Mustang GT. While the used car market would see an influx of original 86's from owners who are willing to drop the car to pick up the upgrade, driving down the price of the original FT86. This is exactly when people want to buy the car. Its classic economics.

Knew this wasn't going to happen 3 years ago. Some people have just been clinging to the possibility. The car isn't meant to have a turbo. It's got plenty of power for what it is and I for one am still glad it hasn't been muddled.

The lack of turbo is not news, I agree.
But the brushing off of any power upgrade is news. As someone mentioned, going to 2.5l has been brought up a number of times as a reasonable power upgrade - once by Tada-san himself. Personally, I would actually prefer the NA route. So I appreciate the posting of this article. I have been waiting to buy with the hope that Toyota or Subaru will do a higher horsepower version with the tS equipment on it. I am stunned that they think there aren't enough buyers, when it would occupy a market all on its own. I don't see a higher output GT86 taking much from the WRX STI, as it's not a four door sedan with a high seating position. It's a shame. I like the way the GT86 looks; I like having small back seats; and I love the chassis. When I drove it, it just felt down on power, and I don't want to have to buy $15K worth of crap in the aftermarket (wheels, tires, supercharger, brakes, chassis stiffening, suspension), to get what could have come for an $8K total premium from Toyota or Subaru with a warranty and resale value. It sucks. The smart thing to do is to give up and buy a 2007ish Carrera S. I never liked 911s, but it is a hell of a lot of car for the money. |

Wish I liked the way 911s looked. Really hard to argue with this:

^I'd take that - with a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty. Otherwise forget about it, those Porsche maintenance and repair bills are insane and the horror stories plentiful.

I would hate the insurance rates with a factory turbo. I would hate the quirks, the loss of reliability, throttle response. But it would fun.
I personally don't think we will see a major overhaul of this car. I think Toyota invested to get people thinking of Toyota associated with some performance. Getting ready for a strong push with the new Supra. I think this chassis will become a sedan. Its too heavy and slow to be considered a real performance sports car. The reliability ratings are already in the toilet, a turbo would really hurt Toyotas reputation. The car has sort of been a failure, I personally don't car 'cause its really a drivers car, but drivers cars don't make money (unless you consider a mustang a drivers car ![]() They'll make it a sedan to recoup their capital investment and move on to other things.

I wish they would make this car like the 944 -- base model, S2 (larger displacement NA), and turbo versions. That way everyone is happy.
I can't understand the logic behind not offering a turbo version. I can't think of any other car that's had so many people installing aftermarket turbo kits when it's still under warranty, so there's obviously a demand. |

That is a really good point. I can't think of another car with that kind of hunger for power upgrades either. |

Mark my words. There will be a power increase once the Nissan iD-x, Kia Stinger, Ford Mustang 4cly, and other competitors hit the market. Toyota is just waiting to see what the competition has up their sleeve at the same time not shooting it's current platform in the foot. |
