Question for the AT group ...... is it possible to do a "money shift" (over revving the FR-S engine) by downshifting .. ?? Will the auto allow that .. ??

Typically an oil starved motor will start knocking before clanking.

As I'm sure most of you know, a lot of cars nowadays (including my '12 Accord Coupe) have a computer that tells you when to change the oil. BMW's as well. I recall Car and Driver said one of the BMW's didn't ask for a change until like 12k or 13k miles.

The Accord consistently asks for it at 9k miles - which is within the range of what the owner's manual calls for (it also calls for petroleum based oil).

If the engine isn't getting too hot, the primary issue is going to be dirt in the oil. If you have clean filters and aren't driving in a freaking sand storm, I'd be surprised to see really dirty oil in a car at 5k or even 7500 miles.

For moderate street use (especially with synthetic oil), I doubt you'd do any damage going out to 10k miles for changes. But then you should follow your owner's manual - at minimum.

Running it dry is an entirely different matter, as is track use (again, because of the likely high temps).

OP is giving me a headache... Sell the car and have the parents get you an older Civic, something you can't screw up.

2 issues:

1) You're 22? Why are your parents involved with this?

2) Why is it bone dry? Even at 10k miles, there should be oil in the car. How did the dealer convince you that they were not at fault here?

No way in hell the engine consumed all the oil within a 10,000 mile oil change. Obviously their was a major issue with the engine unless one the the Subaru technicians didn't do a proper oil change for example put enough oil in the car. Get a lawyer. If you don't win the case don't let the dealership touch the car buy a short block from full blown and have a local reputable shop put it in.

^Agreed. What you did was not the smartest but if it is as you say, then the engine should not fail by going over an oil change interval by 2.5k miles.
