Don't ride the clutch.

You should pass through the transition point as fast as you can while launching smoothly. Typically this is where throttle is applied.

Make sure you have the latest ECU update on your car with the Idle monitor fix, I think I kind of know what your talking about with the unstable idle. Keep in mind the ECU is always learning so things can change depending on how you drive the car.

For the BRZ the new ECU update came out here a few weeks ago.

Oh, my .....

goshem, I'm thinken you may be "grabbing" for things to worry about.

As shown by @Porsche up above, that test will help determine if your clutch disk is about wore out or your pressure plate is weak or the clutch is way out of adjustment.

If your clutch is "chattering" it will be quite apparent (it sounds like a thrashing machine).

If it is out of adjustment (one way) you won't be able to put your car in gear if the engine is running.

So, it sounds to me like your clutch is "normal". If in doubt, I suggest you go down to the dealership or to a meet up and drive another MT car ....

Would you please post the ROM ID of this new ECU update you speak of?
And is that for a 2013?

Required when doing extremely slow and careful maneuvers in and out of a very tight garage. Otherwise with normal driving, no need even with traffic creep.

"Required" must have a different meaning in Canada eh?

Can you engage the clutch fully without the engine stalling?

If so, your clutch is badly worn and requires replacement.

If the engine stalls immediately, then your clutch still has sufficient bite. Who knows for how long?

You may have a bit of oil, or something, on your clutch disc, or the disc may be glazed.

Try "burning it off" by doing a couple of aggressive launches, a.k.a. drag racing starts.

Good luck.

Ok so I just tried doing what you said. I let it half way and it certainly catches but if I completely let out the clutch I'm almost 100% sure it will stall out. So what's the deal?

Well, it could be "required".

Say you had just left your lover's apartment and you were down in the parking garage, with a car with loud exhausts, and as you were just about to leave, you noticed her husband (which you knew) walking through the garage .....

Is there something wrong with the car?

Is your complaint about the clutch slipping or the rpms fluxuating under a load?
Older 13's have a TSB out for idle issues..
I'm used to v8 where u let the cluch out slowly without any accel and then u use the gas to go.. This car however will tend to bog and stall using the same technique.. I still try for the grab at low rpms.. but u have to be already on the gas early, before complete engagement.. You really have to drive this car to get it smooth.. Gets more natural with time..

Idk now I'm scared I just did the clutch test in 5th gear and it didn't immediately stall out.. (

I can't believe it, I just got the car and never dumped the clutch nor rode the clutch too hard (over 2k rpms) or rode the clutch too long.. How can this happen?

New to driving stick? Ever smell a burning, nasty smell while you're driving? Kinda like tires, but maybe worse? Slipping the clutch too much, too often will wear it out. Sucks, but it's a learning thing. I toasted a clutch while I was learning to drive too, not the end of the world. Pockets hurt for a bit though.

I kind of get what your saying. Doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes the idling RPM's will drop so that I will stall when trying to launch normally like I always do, leading me to think I'm still a sh0ddy MT driver after 4000 miles. It's a known issue with this car though, just feather the throttle more
