My numbers are almost exactly the same as this. I'm 25 and insurance is with Progressive. I know where you live, insurance history, and driving record factor into this as well.

A 16 year old can not own a car in the states. Your parents are the actual owners of the car if you are not 18+.

As far as why I think being rewarded with a nice new car for something as simple as good grades, they require no real work. With an older car you have to fix it and most of the time it makes no sense to have a shop do it. It takes almost no brain power to read a set of instructions of how to bolt on an exhaust or intake. However, rebuilding drum brakes or dealing with stuck/rusted bolts holding the engine to the trans takes some brain power. This is good for kids because they won't be relying on a tow truck driver to change their tire or jump start their car because they have no car sense.

As for me, started with a 95 jetta with 202k miles on it then moved onto my impreza. Neither went on a garage lift except for inspections. Bought the jetta at 16(my parents name but paid for by me 100%), I was working for my father doing small construction on private residences making $10/hr. It was definitely not a gravy train. Now I'm 23 and work as a marine engineer after driving my impreza for 4 years through college. It was my graduation present to myself. I do make loan payments and give my parents money to pay them back for college. Moral is, until your name is on everything to do with the car, you don't own it.

$267 a month? Are you sure you aren't paying for a lease?

Hello @CoupedUpSubie ......

I'm afraid I'm going to have to take exception to that statement. You might check Texas & North Carolina laws for example.

As far as Wahinngton State, there is an exception:

RCW 46.12.755
Ownership of motor vehicle by person under eighteen prohibited — Exception.
(1) A person under the age of eighteen may not be the registered or legal owner of a motor vehicle unless the:

(a) Motor vehicle was previously registered in the person's name in another jurisdiction while a resident of that jurisdiction;

(b) Person is on active military duty with the United States armed forces; or

(c) Person is, in effect, emancipated.

The poster is from Alabama .... "The Alabama Department of Revenue says that Alabama law does not provide for a minimum age requirement to own a vehicle and thus you can do so at any age".

I'm 18 with a MT Fr-s. Noticed that a lot of the people with the same car as me in my area are 25+. Hard to connect with them sometimes, they give me that "wtf are you doing with the car" look.

@humfrz unless a person under 18 somehow saved 25k and was emancipated then they could own one themselves. A person under 18 cannot take out a loan as far as I know, and doing so with no credit is near impossible. That is the biggest reason a minor can not own a car, also the laws quoted have many holes in them which make the exceptions basically useless.
