I agree flex fuel is a serious improvement over running two maps, and is great to have, but id be shocked to see an fa20 actually blow up due to low ethanol content e85 or even regular gas on an e map. The ecu would pull a ton of timing, throw the cel and go into limp mode before that could happen. Of course I've never seen it happen, but just given the hyperactivity of the knock control and it's operable range, and how limp mode works, it seems incredibly unlikely. If you made it through the first wot pull you'd be in limp mode by them, and you'd notice a problem before you ever made that pull just from the drivability.
Not saying it's a good idea, but at the same time it's a bit alarmist to suggest that normal e content variation would cause catastrophic failure without it. Now if your tuner is a moron and disabled knock control, all bets are off. |

Who in their right mind would do this on a customer car?

You'd be surprised. It's a very active system, so just like some tuners disable ltft rather than taking the time to eliminate trims with calibration, some disable knock correction rather than taking the time to tune to the knock limit and find ways to achieve more knock resistance (ie cam timing adjustments etc) when they 'need more power'.
As you've seen tuning your car, the ecu will pretty much shut down the party when it thinks it's time to go home, and adding all the timing in the world will just result in more being pulled even if there's still no audible knock (disclaimer: don't do that lol). To get around this and post 'forum numbers' some may resort to disabling these systems either temporarily or permanently. Cause big numbers yo! Reliability doesn't sell tunes... As we quoted yesterday.. The car gods will come knocking, and when they do the party's over regardless of what the dyno says. Some folks would rather put up a big number than listen and have a good, safe, reliable, consistent tune though. |

Not to mention disabling ltft makes for some pretty shitty drivability without dead nuts calibration, which you wouldn't have if you disabled them lol. Again, drivability fdoesnt sell anything...

I tune for drivability and reliability. I could care less what a dyno says. I'm free to do this because I don't have to compete for anyone's business... If they want tuned to the ragged edge there are plenty of folks willing to do it for a fee. To me that last 3-5% just isn't worth it.

drivability and buyers remorse are like twin star systems tidally locked in an inevitable gravitational death.

If your short trims stabilize at anything greater than +/-3% and your long trims are always zero, they're off. For knock control you'd have to look in the rom. Of course if your car is audibly knocking and it's not pulling timing, that's obvious.

For knock, you could always take a hammer to the block while it's running and see if knock is triggered lol
I mean it's no worse than what they're doing rofl Squidclaimer: I'm not serious
