I don't see why that part needs to be a firm solid plastic or urethane piece. Am i missing the point?

Not really, it was just a simple concern from someone who didn't realize it wasn't an integral part of the car's structure.

+1, this isn't a surprise. Also, go push on pretty much any new car bumper cover and you get the exact same flimsiness. It's an aesthetic cover just barely strong enough to hold its shape and not tear itself off at-speed.

You are pressing on the lower portion of the bumper. If you push on any modern day car bumper that has a lower diffuser piece like that it will flex, there is nothing behind it.
