Hope you are not just NOW realizing this. When the R9 290 was announced to retail for $400, I got excited. Then mining took off and the next thing I know, all the HD 7800/7900 series and R9 280/290 series prices sky rocketed

Ended up getting an R9 270X 4 GB, for my HTPC/Steam Big picture gaming, which is not too bad. Still paid a $40 premium for it

On top of that, my main computer is stuck with an HD 5870 for gaming. I have had the card since release and was hoping to replace it with an R9 290 (non X), but that does not look like it will be happening any time soon.

I paid 499 for my 290 yesterday, with BTC, and 530 for my 290X back in december. Sucks, but oh well... both card where bought with BTC.

I haven't actively followed computer hardware cycles for awhile now, i was ready to jump into mining before all this blew up, a stage iv cancer diagnosis in the family and its resulting life change later and i've missed the rush.

I just pulled my head out of the sand a week ago, no need to be an asshole

Picked up a few things locally on 30 day return policys, have a month to see if the hardware will keep its rate toward payoff (2-3 month figure in my head, realistically 3). Did have one recent 3 year old system that was usable for a few cards, then picked up the bones for another.

Have a handful of piciex1 riser cables ordered, once they show after another shopping trip i should be able to have about 5.6m/hash going. 2.4 ish atm (6x 270x @$220 each). The 270x have about the same cost per hash as the market price for 280x, difference being best buy carries them also more power consumption roughly 70 watts more for the same hash, and 2x the slots occupied.

Hashcows seemed to be kinda shitty, middlecoin reads to be decent unless i've missed something? No time to micromanage with other obligations to handle on the table, most i can really do is set up the machine(s) and make sure they stay running with remote access.

debating running my Asus 7970 here when I get back home from leave...on your 7970 what temps are you getting? Might need new thermal paste.... I have the $$ to build a rig or two with some 7950s (seem to be the best bang for the buck as far as power consumption to dollar made) the 7970s use a bit more power. And mine is a Matrix Platinum factory OC'd card. Just dont wanna drop a bunch of $ just yet so figure run the gaming rig and see how well it does for a month. Go from there. Wish I had built my gaming rig with duel 7950s now though when they were cheap.

The first day I used it seemed good, but definitely agree since.

Any advice on where to use?

I am mining Dogecoin full time 24/7 with 2 290's and a 5830. Nets be 1.9 Hash rates. I should have bought more 290's when they were 399$!

FUCK. Is that with an ASIC miner? It's SHA-3, so does that mean GPU mining is useless?

Also I'm hashing at about 650-670 per card now. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to extract the other 100 KH/s per card. Maybe older drivers?
