The army blessed me with fort drum my as my first duty station so I've been battling lake effect snow for two winters now. I'm still on the stock summers which for most is nuts but I'm managing it pretty well actually. Everyone says don't drive rwd cars up here yet I keep seeing all fwd cars and trucks winding up in ditches. What I'm doing is insane but I guess I'm proving the point that it can be done. As mentioned earlier turn you TCS completely off. If it kicks in your wheels won't spin fast enough and you will be done. Whenever I'm parked and setting off I start in 2nd with a light roll off. If I'm going up hill I often put it in 5th or 6th and rev to about 4-5k wheels will be spinning fast as he'll but you'll be crawling. You'll also get a good lesson in counter steering as you'll be sideways up the hill and pretty much any turn. There are times when the snow gets just too high though so I have a set of chains that I use to "unstuck" myself. All I do is whip out the jack, slip the chain on drop it and churn myself out. Even works on ice. I've found that I works best if it put on just one wheel with TCS on. The wheels will spin inside the chains with two. I only use the chain in the city never on the highway as max speed with them is 30mph. You can go a little faster but the vibrations will annoy/ scare the shit out of you and the band's will break. I got the chain set from Walmart for about $35.

I just read the thread title and ROFL! They are summer compound tires what did you expect?
Don't think I saw this on the stock tires.

OP lives in Eastern PA and doesn't know that you shouldn't use 1st gear when trying to get unstuck?
I feel like there's a common sense issue at play here ![]() FYI when you put an automatic transmission into "winter" mode (if it has one) it usually starts in 3rd gear...to give you an idea of what works best...

Not rude to point out something everyone should know.

You proved a point, then went out of the way to make fun of him. I'd say that's pretty rude. Let's refrain from that to avoid devaluing the knowledge base here.
To sum up the thread here: 1) Get proper tires for the condition 2) IF you get stuck, try to use a higher gear like 2nd or 3rd gear 3) Have a small shovel and de-icer/salt/kitty litter in your trunk 4) Bonus: live in an area that doesn't snow :P |

Dude it's summer compound you need to take into account the drop in temperature (below freezing that's why there's snow on the ground)? I'm running Ultra High Performance All Season Tires on mine (Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3) and they specifically address below freezing adhersion with sunflower oil compound. I don't even drive it in the snow due to safety reasons. Good luck with your stock Primacys going up snowy / icy driveways. You can try dipping the clutch and turn off traction control and just spin your way up. I hope you have proper winter tires on your AWD car. You can get away with all seasons on a FWD car but light weight AWD car again good luck. |

Driving on snow/ice in the stock wheels is a blast... as long as you are careful. I find it fun to practice my ice/snow driving ability.
BUT, it did take me 25 minutes to get the FR-S into my driveway after winter storm Nika nailed central kentucky... It's only 15 or so feet. Cheers, and enjoy every moment of it! You don't often get to drift so hardcore! |
