fwiw the search functionality on this forum is completely broken, so i see where he's coming from anyway. it just returns every post ever made that has the word you type in it, it's not smart at all. god forbid someone put 'injector' in their signature, you'd never find anything useful on injector tuning.

LOL someone is a little edgy today. Chill. Out. Brah.

I guess teaching, learning and researching yourself first is completely overrated? Hence the current state of affairs. I guess I am just better at finding the meaning to acronyms - thanks google for being so easy to use.

LTFTSTFTLOLFIGGMAFWOTAFRDERPDERP

If you know how to use appropriate keywords you can find A LOT. For example, "what is ltft" "what is maf" "what is afr car" - just typed those in and what do you think happened next? PM me if you need me to google that for you

Sigh. I guess I should have said "is there a very basic tutorial on tuning the FR-S using the OpenFlash tablet, RomRaider and or TunerPro. Also, a very basic "Dummies" introduction to the terms used would be most helpful. Almost all of the sites that turn up using the Google-machine are all sites where most of the people posting already have a solid understanding of what they are doing, and when you ask a question they assume that you also have the same level of understanding. Very few people are interested (or are able to to, it seems) answer very basic questions."

Being old and a former Jarhead, the lack of written materials for most things suck. I look forward to the day when my new Doctor learned his trade from a Youtube video. Then again, I'm probably the only person here who took the FR-S manual to the shitter to read through.

The best answer to that question would e the ecutek ft-86 tuning doc, though it's basically more of an explanation of what the tables do rather than what to do with them. That part is best learned through experience and just doing it.

If you can't work out how to find the most basic of information that has already been posted many times, there's no way on this earth you should be trying to tune an ecu.

So asking a question like "How do I start learning how to tune" on a forum titled "Discuss all software tuning topics." is just completely un-like "researching" and must be considered "Off topic"....
Got it!

Seems kind of like "Googling" a topic and having the google search engine ask you if you went to the library first.

I mean the OP had a question about "tuning subaru ECUs" and he went to the more specific of the two places: Google, or a forum about Tuning Subaru ECUs..

How do you know that he did not Google - "Software Tuning subaru ECUs" and he was directed to this forum??
How did most of us FIND this forum?

Which is EXACTLY why I'm asking if there is a tutorial or person who has the
knowledge who could put together such a thing. You, for example, with your PhD in tuning and decades of experience could do a great service by doing just such a thing.

In my experience, lots people who want to get into tuning think "what buttons do I push and in what order to make my car go faster?" That's really not a good way of looking at it.

So I have to ask: how much time are you (OP or whoever) willing to spend learning how to tune? There's a lot of basic background information you need to be exposed to kind of "get" how tuning works. What are the basic sensors used in a modern engine? Why do you need them? What are they used to calculate? What are the basic devices/actuators (injectors, throttle, AVCS cam phasers)? Why do you need them?

There's a mix of "textbook" and hands on. You need to go back and forth between the two--do a little work behind the wheel, study to understand what is happening and why. You can't spend hours and hours reading books and writeups and then immediately "get" what's going on. Nor can you just press buttons and click things and fully "get it" without some technical knowledge and theoretical understanding.
