ITBs on a Subaru boxer engine have been attempted and not succeeded in getting past design issues. Expect an ITB setup by a reputable company to be beyond most people's means.

This. Not to mention with engine bay space being such a large factor with this car I don't see it happening.

how tough would it look with four trumpets from the ITBs sticking out of the bonnet.

I can't see many people buying something similar for this car at that cost. Would it be so f'ing cool? Yes. The reality is that the flat engine is rather expensive to engineer certain parts for. Porsche is the only other manufacturer still using them and their engines are on another level, including cost-wise. However, if an ITB setup were to come to market for a flat 4 Subaru engine this would be the platform I'd expect to see it in, given the limited application in a F/I setup. EDIT: This car, from what I've seen, has throttle-by-wire. That means an ITB setup gets that much more complicated since you don't have a simple mechanical link between the pedal and throttle body. Some kind of electronic mumbo-jumbo would have to be figured out in regards to the electronic motor that actuates the throttle body, or in this case, 4 ITBs. I simply don't see that kind of research and development going into this platform. Quote:

throttle by wire is only a limitation if you want to keep the stock programing
people jumping over to ITBs are likely to run stand alone so whether the throttle operation is electronic or mechanical is of no concern. you can most likely drop in a mechanical pedal and call it a day. more work sure, but at the level of prep where ITBs come in the car is probably in pieces anyway.

I like how easy you make that sound. Obviously I think better intake manifold designs (Plastic is light and smooth though) will have a larger market hold than ITBs.

Another problem with mechanical throttle is that load is controlled with both the throttle and the valve timing, you'd need to lock the VVT-i in the position for highest load at a given rpm if you want load fully controlled by throttle, but you'll have very bad issues with idling and low load stability. For best results ITB should be integrated into the stock system in some sense...

ITB...why exactly?....you haven't even gotten the car yet and you want to sacrifice low end torque for a little bit of response and top end?
I think there are gains to be had in the intake manifold, but I think to really make this motor come alive we will be well into the internals, or doing proper finishing of the motor with a turbo. Don't get me wrong I like a set of stacks as much as the next guy but...you need some serious runner length to keep the torque peak near stock, or even with in the limits of stock redline...not a huge potential on this motor at the current time, maybe later when they can spin like a rotary...just no time soon. |

couldnt have said it better myself. When it comes time for some real high performance, boost will need to be entered into the equation. Sorry horsepower-phobic people.
