Thing is, I've seen civics done right & they're no laughing matter. Good machines.

This. These guys are hysterical and down to earth. I'd much rather watch them than the crap that's on TV.

I agree with the post in general. However we all have our prejudices. Us track guys respect and like basically anything on the track, whether it's a $3,000 rusted piece of shit like my track car or a 911 GT3 RS 4.0 with 18 miles on it getting backed off a trailer for it's first track day. On the flip side, I wouldn't modify a car for show or stance because, to me, it's not functional and there's no point to it. That doesn't mean I don't have respect for those who build what they want, just that it's not what I'm into so it will always be placed lower in what I like than said $3,000 rusted piece of shit.
People posting questions of "Should I get this or that for my car next?" leads to this type of stuff also. If it's a technical question (IE, what are the pros/cons of this coilover vs that coilover) that's one thing.. but the "should I get a CF hood or wheels?" threads will always lead to what MCM is talking about. I do enjoy taking my cars, as dirty as possible, to meets and events. It amuses me how many people seem to give a shit that I didn't wash my car. I love when people actually avoid the track car because it's "nasty" and then a track GT3 RS shows up and hangs out and talks

^ yup. Last time I took the mitsu to a show, it had tire chunks and vht all over it.
I don't get the fwd argument. My fwd crushes souls, just like every car it has advantages and disadvantages, and it has to be set up properly. What I like will always trump what I find distasteful, but I'll still give a high five for effort even if I thinks it's ugly as shit.

whats the difference between elitism and doing things the right way the first time? I don't toot my own horn, but i do concern myself in doing it right within my means.

I may want to build a few C7 Z51 track cars but I don't have the money to do so. Does that make my well setup Integra the "wrong way"? The right way is building what you want and can afford. Fuck what other people think.

Elitism = disdain, belittlement or general dismissiveness of another's likes or interests.
Critism =/= Elitism We must not vilify proper criticism. It's absolutely OK to tell someone they're doing it wrong, especially in situations where they are blatantly ignorant to that reality. Example of Elitism: Guy makes fun of another guy because he likes drifting and is building a drift car. That is not valid criticism. It is elitism.. Example of Critism: Guy tells another guy who's building a drift car that he should not have chosen a fwd car if his desire is to go drifting. That is valid criticism. Now the guy might have chosen that platform on purpose but nonetheless, it's still a valid critique. After 3 pages I feel like the distinction needed to be made.

People are calling a car that has heavily cosmetic modifications and little or no internal modifications a "rice car".
So what would those rich people with big houses, expensive cars, nice ladies call a FRS with rocket bunny kit and 19"x12" wheels in rear and only has 174whp a what???? RICE CAR. People should stop calling this/that is a rice car or so. You don't like it doesn't mean the owner doesn't. I don't like a big ass wing on a stock FRS but I don't call it rice. He might tracks his car every month, that's is still better than me if I put expensive wheels, nice body kit, loud exhaust but never go to the track. Now I think he has a race car and I have a rice car. Too sad to be true. |

My point is that so many enthusiasts are so anxious to modify that they settle. I can have these XXRs now or be patient and wait a couple more months and buy a pair of Gram Lights. I understand it boils down to personal preference, I'm just simply disagreeing that we should look at one car with genuine and reputable parts vs something done cheaply the same. Ego is everywhere, i just dont think I would consider this elitist.

It comes down to what's important to the consumer. I've owned volks, Desmond, etc. I've also owned rotas on and off for over a decade. Never had one fail and they were a fantastic track wheel. There is a perceived quality to many automotive parts based on zero experience. I pick parts off experience and intended usage. I don't pick by brand names or because forum members will think I'm cool. Some parts on my track car are from manufacturers I doubt anyone here has heard of. It's had some custom bits that I've made in the past because none of the cool brands made what I wanted. On the flip side it has some parts that would make it cool in a parking lot (like its Mugen intake). There's a "can't hide money" sticker where the Mugen name is normally. Hopefully thieves will think its fake if they ever see it. I have that intake because its the best for my needs, not because of the name. Point is, if you want gram lights, rock on. If you want xxrs, rock on. I pick my wheels by size, weight, strength and the ability to clear my brakes. Brand never enters the equation with few exception (known personally not by Internet pics to break, like SSR comps in 15x7 back in the day or on the cheap side ADR spyders). Appearance barely enters it. I would prefer not to have teddy bear wheels, but if they were light and strong... Rock on.

Your attempt at a witty answer completely misses the point. Theres a difference in saving $600 for something legit than a copy. Your example is unattainable because i dont make the money to purchase a $400,000 car. However, If you drive a twin, you most likely are making some sort of decent money. I just don't think buying real is elitism. Thats my opinion and its not really gonna change. Quote:
Final point, lol! To ME, elitism isn't whats in your car. It's the owners ego. I don't go around saying "hey, look at me". I preference is real over fake/counterfeit/copy. That doesn't make me an elitist.

I suppose what boggles my mind is the amount of people who give a damn what other people think and say about the choices they make regarding their modifications - whether it is criticized due to not being the "right style, brand, color, etc."
Why do people care? Really - why do you care? Do what makes you happy. Buy the mods you want, from the vendors you want, and the brands you want. Who gives a flying fuck what other people think. If you're out there building your car to impress others then you're doing it wrong and you should probably re-evaluate how you're living your life, as that probably doesn't just extend to your car.
