If you don't think "Damn, what a sexy ass car" every time you walk past your car, you bought the wrong one.

So im missing something then, that should be a plug and play as eclispe uses toyota plugs. Let me put it this way. In the 10 pin harness there is a brown wire(pin#9) next to a pink(pin#8) that is the amp turn on wire that needs be powered up while stereo is on.

The blue wire is labeled "power antenna" on the wire itself. The Sony HU, of course, has the blue/white wire that's tagged with a label sticker as "remote turn on". I'm familiar with this, as it is used to wire directly to the remote turn on input on aftermarket amps. The aftermarket harness doesn't have a blue/white wire for remote turn on... at least not one labeled as such. So, I bet that doubled over line on the metra harness is for both powered antenna and remote turn-on from the remote turn-on lead from the Sony HU. Attached is a picture of the wiring harness layout of the Sony XAV-701HD. The sheet also has instructions on powering the remote antenna if there is one, but the harness from Sony doesn't have a dedicated powered antenna lead.

Also, the Metra harness had a orange/black lead for "Dimmer gnd". I'm guessing (most likely correctly) that this is just for HU's which receive the dimmer input from dimmer ground, not dimmer (+). Haven't had one yet that did that, though (since I've owned a car, I've owned 4 aftermarket HU's: 2 JVC's, a pioneer, and now this Sony). No biggie, just another item I noticed.

But I'll try this. It'll be nice to have SOME extra bass (though muddy and crummy) until this coming Saturday when the JL Amp, JL sub, JBL components, and JL 4" coaxials go in.

I think it was supposed to be left unplugged though, as the metra harness didn't have provision to fit this one. It's more than just remote amp turn on, as there's several pins there that are wired to something. Curiosity is definitely getting to me on what this particular harness is for. I'm pretty certain on what all the stock HU monitors and where it gets its data, and all those sources and outputs are accounted for (geo location and speed from the gps, radio from the antenna and it's powered wire, device input from the usb/aux-in cable, standard speaker and power harnesses, xm radio input from xm antenna in).

Maybe it's for connecting to the ecu for speed input, and for some reason it needs quite a few wires to determine that, just so it can say 'screw you' to dialing or texting or even getting to your contact list when the wheels are moving.
There's a thread somewhere that shows the back of the FR-S and BRZ head units. Though they are different, they use the exact same plugs, just arranged differently, and it shows what all is what. This might be it, I haven't dug through it yet.

The metra harness that was sent to me as an adapter had 2 harnesses, which I successfully wired up: a 5 pin, and a 10 pin.

I'm not sure the adapter harness colors matched the wires they were adapting to, so I wasn't looking at the actual harness itself (the cables don't pull out of the opening that far, and being all bundled together and tied off down the line to the interior, it's hard to get a good look at all the wires there going into which pins), so I don't know if that's it or not. I can only tell you what the metra harness had. And I forgot which harness had the doubled over wire (linking 2 pins together) for the powered antenna-labeled lead.

It's late, but there being church tomorrow and that this will keep bugging me till I do something about it, I'm going to go out and crimp the remote lead to the blue wire on the adapter harness and we'll just have to see what happens. I'll see if I can identify the wires the blue wire connects to on the OEM harness. If it leads to a brown wire, we're golden I suspect.

But the mystery harness is, after looking at the linked NASIOC thread in the thread that was just earlier linked, the factory 28-pin harness.

Here is the pin-by-pin description of that harness (this was the droid I was looking for!): http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...28&postcount=9 (do note, this is for the Imprezas, so the aux-in isn't handled here in the BRZ, but in the USB/Aux-in plug that is single cable leading from the usb/aux-in assembly)

Yes the blue ant plug wire and the metra 17-1761 blue wire go to the sony's blue with white stripe wire.

cue Mr. Burns: "Excellllllent"

Edit: Und zat vurked.

Surprisingly, the audio quality went up a notch. The bass doesn't sound near as bad as with the stock HU. I'm starting to think that the stock sound system isn't really all that terrible in the audio department... it's just terrible and clunky in the DSP area, and the interface has much to be desired (but is leaps and bounds above the stock Clarion units Subies normally come with.... ). Mirrorlink audio just SUCKED previously. I'll have to see if it sounds cleaner now (doubt it, as before the USB and BT audio sounded just fine without the amp being turned on, but the mirrorlink audio just sounded.... crackly, like it was clipping the digital audio just a tad before it hit the DAC).

This new HU is definitely a VERY good upgrade (Sony XAV-701HD) for the price. But I wouldn't spend $500 on a new HU like this just to keep it wired to the stock audio system. I have a feeling I'm going to really like what better speakers, amp, and an actual subwoofer can do for this car. That's when this HU's DSP capabilities will come into play, I think. I've heard negative things about Sony's car audio products in the past, and I still wouldn't use their amps, subs, and speakers when there's much better available (same with Pioneer, though their Champion series amps can't be beat for the price they go for).
