You said you're "in the process of learning how to drive a manual." Just a hunch... are you at a point of frustration in learning that prompted you to post this thread/are you having second thoughts? It can be tough but don't get discouraged and stick with it.

I've haphazardly thrown myself into this before. My 1st manual car was driven off the dealer lot by me stalling a few times with jerky shifting (my family who went with me didn't know how to drive manual). Daily stalling on the freeway on my commute to/from work in SoCal traffic was frustrating for a while. But I stuck with my car and forced myself to learn. My 1st year or 2 took extra mental energy compared to how I drive now which is completely effortless/carefree even in stop-n-go traffic. The act becomes a part of you... like remembering to breathe.

You seem to have an inkling of interest in the manual. Don't let fear deny yourself of your curiosity. Answer the question yourself and get the manual. That's the only way to fully define the truth you're looking for. If it doesn't grow on you, then, oh well, lesson learned for your next car purchase. But I hope you let that inkling fully develop into an appreciation of a handy, fun little skill to have. It's a peculiarity in life God gave us worth experiencing through mastery. Especially nowadays before it goes extinct.

I did not know this. I thought auto would cost more.

There's just nothing as satisfying as going through a corner, rev-match by heel-toe (basically braking and blipping the throttle with ur right foot), then stabbing the clutch with the other foot, and then downshift to the lower gear. Fun shit!!!
Well if you're just starting out driving stick, then doing other things while driving may be more difficult. Ie - cruising along in 5th gear on the highway with stuff in your hands/lap, then see traffic abruptly stop and realize you need to keep a hand on the wheel, use the other to downshift, right foot on brake, left foot on clutch. If you're not prepared, something's going to spill or not get done.

You can certainly knit while driving manual, but if you knit while driving often, you'll probably want an automatic.

I think tranzformer misspoke; the auto is an option and is thus more expensive than the manual.

Cool. Why not go for the manual? YOLO - that's the mentality of many of us here buying this kind of car. A few weeks should be enough for like 97% mastery. The last 3% are intricacies that take a while. Like developing a level of sensitivity that let's you pick up the clutch travel/grab point on any car other than yours and commit it to muscle memory for smooth shifting almost instantly.

I haven't driven standard in years and never owned one to practice on thoroughly. I'll be getting used to the clutch on the way home from the dealership in traffic. Necessity is the mother of invention; I'll either adapt or die (crash in this case). It's not hard to learn the idiosyncrasies of a particular car in a weekend.

FWIW, this should be easier to drive than the WRX because this is RWD and not AWD. Instead of shockloading the gears on a bad shift, you'll just spin the rears momentarily.

I would say Automatic to be honest. Any time somebody asks that question I think the right answer is Automatic. Anybody who wants a Manual knows they really want a Manual.

I have actually considered getting the Automatic because I am on the phone a lot when I'm driving and like to write down appointments when I'm stopped at red lights. But, meh, I'll make do.

i could have sworn we discussed this before in a different thread these noobs are starting to swarm over towards the BRZHOOD -_____-
...but you honestly dont sound very enthusiastic about driving an MT so don't buy something you're not really up for. (my 2cents)

well i'm relatively new to driving it so, an automatic would be a better bet for now, Until i finish practicing the manual. Ideally automatic off the lot would be better, but i think i'll have more fun mastering manual afterwards though. Only get to buy one car so i want to pick the one ill end up having hte most fun with.

My flow chart
Do you have some debilitating injury that forces you to drive auto ---> No? ---> M/T.

`nuff said

Seriously, my first manual car was when I truly learned . Took about a week and a half to be completely comfortable.

Driven a few automatics in my time, but I've been driving a manual for over 10 years now. I've always preferred feeling more in control of things and I am so used to driving a manual that things like stop and go traffic don't even bother me cause it's just reflex at this point. I always feel weird when i have to drives someone's car that is an AT cause I keep wanting to shift.

It really comes down to preference, what you are comfortable with, and what your tolerance is.

I would get manual car. Manual = man control, Automatic = Machine control (unless you use sport mode).
Some extremists would say, "you need to drive a manual car to be a car enthusiast", I call it BS. Transmission has nothing to do with being an enthusiast; However, it's more practical to use manual to shift up and down than use sport mode in automatic.
