Should i get manual or AT?
I'm in the process of learning how to drive a manual since the brz,speed3, and gencoupe are all on my choice to get this upcoming summer and after lurking on this thread alot, it seems the general consensus is the brz/frs should be brought in manual to get the most out of it. =P please don't flame me i was just wondering what the extra things you can do with MT that you can't with AT. Was looking to get an AT since i want to use it as a daily driver to and i'm pretty lazy in the morning and stuff when i drive.

You're asking a Majority that will tell you to get a Manual because that's how the car was made to be, to be as pure as possible. There's nothing wrong with the AT and there's not much either or can have over the other, there's a Snow mode on the Auto for extra safety. Other then that, both can be used well in motor sports, the Manual will be better in Auto X. But it's really to the person, if you're a lazy person in the morning and when you drive. Then why get a manual they require you to be attentive, in fact please be attentive when you drive.
I think I speak for most of us, when I say we can't answer you're question because... it's not an easy question. |
The auto in this car actually seems pretty nice. The gearing may be different though as it gets better fuel economy. You can still select the gear you want with the auto, but you don't have control of the clutch.
I definitely wanted the manual - even for daily driving / commuting around LA traffic, I still like to row my own gears. It is nice to see a decent auto option though. Subaru of past would throw a 4EAT autotragic in there and not worry about enthusiasts. Consider an auto if: You drink coffee/soda while driving. Eat a sandwich, taco, burger, etc while driving. Hold hot items in your lap while driving. Like to hold a cell phone while driving. Basically, a manual transmission requires you to have both hands free as well as both legs able to move quickly. Ie, hot cup of coffee between your legs will be bad when you hit the brakes and need to put in the clutch. |
Get a Manuel, they make good tacos

I'm one of the few (on this forum) who has ordered the BRZ as an automatic. I'm not going to be doing autocross, and my past three cars have had paddle shifters tied to a verity of transmissions. I think they can be a lot of fun, and my only complaint has been slow shift times which by most accounts is not the case with the FRS/BRZ.

I think you should get which ever one you enjoy more. Maybe wait until you can test drive one? Manual will cost $1000 more but AT will get better fuel economy. Do what will make you happy. I have never heard of someone who bought a 350/370z in a manual wish they bought a auto. But I have heard guys with a AT wish they had a MT. YMMV.

If you have to ask - get an AT.

honestly i would recommend a stick shift for the reason that based on your choices for cars it is clear that fun is on your mind. also, you should really try to test drive all those cars before buying. the speed3 is a different animal and may be something you may appreciate more. besides, the fwd is kind of nice for a new driver |
Test drive the AT first. Then decide from there. :happy0180:

And doubting an already made decision - the first step to disappointment. I'd say pick something and stick with it, w/o spending effort debating merits of alternatives. The latter will only make future disappointed stronger. Quote:

Oh please manual doesn't stop anyone from eating, be on the cell, drink coffee. Anyone saying that obviously doesn't drive a manual. Trust me, you find ways and adapt. I know I learned how to drive a 6-speed in my Z, and I adapted multi-tasking while driving manual.
There's just nothing as satisfying as going through a corner, rev-match by heel-toe (basically braking and blipping the throttle with ur right foot), then stabbing the clutch with the other foot, and then downshift to the lower gear. Fun shit!!! |
i'll guess ill just wait till they are out to try both. I'm either or, since i'm currently learning how to drive manual since the cars i have for prospect buying in the summer are the brz/speed3/wrx/and gencoupe. 2 of which are manual only so never a bad thing =).
