Perhaps using the rear window as a stressed member of the chasis makes a coupe body more rigid than a hatch? Combined w/weight savings for coupe (no separate rear window frame/smaller rear window) it may make a noticeable difference in handling.
That being said, I do like hatches better b/c I can easily fit bulky items like a surfboard or bicycle through the back. Toyota should consider cargo/passenger space in designing the FT86 b/c it's the only significant advantage it will have over a Miata since they are priced the same now. in Canada the MX-5 with a 6 speed manual (available only on the GS and above models, start at $33,495. I doubt the FT-86 will be that much in Canada.
And the Canadian spec sheet reports the Miata has 167hp, 140ft-lbs, and weighs 1145kg (2524lbs) If I went with the lowest available option, I'd lose the 6 speed for a 5 speed, but the price would drop to $28,995 and weight would drop to 1130kg (2490lbs) Either way, we know the pricing for the FT-86 will be lower than 28,000 even for the "fully loaded" option. Mind you thats the US pricing, so hell, who knows what we'll be paying in Canada. Edit :: wow pricing in the States is rediculous. Sport MX-5 with a 5 speed is $23,710. Touring with a 6 speed is $26,550. Maybe they had a price update in the States and it hasn't come over to Canada yet -- otherwise it'd be cheaper for a Canadian to fly into Seattle, buy a car, pay the import/inspection/insurance fees at the boarder and drive it home. |

I know we've always paid more for ... ahem ... almost everything... but I'd imagine with the dollar so close, prices would be a little more reasonable, and closer to home. But still having a 5k difference between base model cars is ludicrous.
I hope something changes soon, it's not like our cars are that much better either :P |
