Absolutely. I'm just happy to still be averaging a touch over 30 for winter. (Calculated at pump)

I always figure a drop of atleast 10% for winter.

I find it ridiculous winter blend has less gas and cost the same. Good ol USA.

This may just be derp logic, but freezing cold air = DENSE air. More air means the ECU compensates by dumping more fuel to keep the A/F ratio safe. Add crappy gasoline and you'll easily see a drop in MPG during COLD winters. Baby the throttle, shift early, and ride in higher gears.

Anyone talking just the number of miles per tank is missing half the information.

Make a note of exactly how many miles (or km's for us Canadians) between fill ups, and exactly (down to a couple decimal places) much fuel it took to fill it back up. Once you have those, calculate your actual mpg (or L/100km) and see how you're actually doing. The gauge in the cluster doesn't calculate consumption properly since it ignores long periods of idling, it's a bit optimistic in the best of situations.

My old Jetta (MKIII, 2.slow) got way more km's to a tank, but it was also a 55L tank vs a 45L tank in these cars. If you actually compare the mileage my FRS is slightly better than my Jetta was.

I just use an app on my phone so I don't have to write anything down or do math at a later date, plus it shows me the current tank, running average and has graphs to see trends.

I do 99% driving in the city and according to my car's mpg odometer, I get 21.8 mpg. Though my car has only 650~ miles on it. Everything is stock, except for my cat back (literally does nothing to improve mpg).

With my 86 I drive 50/50, city and highway for work everyday.
I do on average 450km (279 mi) to a tank.
Best I've done was 600+ km (roughly 385 mi) on a road trip sitting on cruise cont. and using high gears, not a lot of stop and starting. That was at 6.7 literes per km (15.7 mpg)!

Oh, I drive M/T, have 32k km (19.8k mi) and use 98 octane fuel in aus (see my mods in signature below)

-- Everytime I fill up I reset my trip meters, and reset my avg. fuel consumption. Perhaps doing that will help you out by giving a most recent avg. fuel reading. if you haven't reset it then it's showing your avg fuel. for the life of the car and that's obviously impossible to make a dent in. --

I got 502 miles out of a tank once. However it was 100% on the highway (non-stop drive) & I was babying the car to see how high I could push the MPG.

Bought my car last month.

1st tank: 330 miles with 10.5 gallon - 31.42 mpg (70 highway/30 city)
2nd tank: 300 miles with 10.5 gallon - 28.57 mpg (60 highway/40 city)
3rd tank: 270 miles with 10.8 gallon -25 mpg (60 highway/30 city/10 track : 70 minutes worth of driving like a crazy ape)

I'm in LA, so I get to put in shitty 91 gas.

Can we please ban MPG topics on ft86club forum? Get a Prius if you like looking at high MPG #.

This is a cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to maintain, easy to fix, fun to drive, somewhat practical car.

For lots of people it sees a significant amount of dd miles because of the above qualities, wether it be because it is their only car or its just a cheap appliance to keep miles off something better. Which means mpg is a factor.

If you don't like mpg threads on your torque less wonder, econobox race car forum don't click on them.

Depending on the cat back, it might actually make mpg worse. Not from exhaust flow, but from under car aerodynamics. Anything that leaves a void where the stock muffler was increases drag.

On Topic: The two biggest reasons your fuel mileage might be suffering are:

#1: Speed. Drag increases with the square of speed. This means the faster you go the rate of increase of drag is exponential, which requires more power to push the car through the air. Slowing down your average speed will have a fairly dramatic effect on your fuel economy.

#2: Rate of acceleration. Going WOT only a couple times can potentially kill the tanks average fuel economy. Pretend that there is an egg under your gas pedal and make slow changes in throttle position. Accelerating gently will go a long way in increasing your average FE.

There are several other methods of increasing fuel mileage like: Driving with load, pulse and glide, increasing tire pressure, etc. I wont bore you with details but this car is capable of MUCH higher FE than the 30 most get but driving the way you need to get those numbers isn't "exciting", nor is it the reason most people bought the car.

TLR Slow down and accelerate slowly and your fuel economy will improve.

start in 2nd, skip gears, light acceleration will get you to 30 mpg fast. keep in mind if you are filling up when your light comes on you are leaving about 2 - 3 gallons in the tank. so, in reality, you are using 10 gallons and not getting 300 miles.

at least this is my personal experience. the brz lists a fuel capacity of 13.2 gallons. when i fill up my tank (usually when the light turns on) i barely ever get more than 10.5 to 11 gallons.
