Couple of things. Remember that motors like the 2jz and the sr20 made 300hp and 200hp from the factory respectively. They weren't monsters until you tuned and modded them. Same goes for the EJ.

Secondly, it's not like those motors didn't have their issues. As much as I love the EJ, 20+ years after after its release and it still has major issues (ringland failure). Frankly, this motor is holding up great to forced induction. Much better than I thought.

Thirdly, you're talking about a bygone era of engines. Those old engines were great at putting down gobs of power. But how were emissions and efficiency? Nothing compared to enginse today. Yes there are a lot of compromises, but they're pretty spectacular when you consider that they burn clean, have very little maintenance, and get great mileage. 30+mpg is impressive in my book for a 100hp/lt motor that isn't belching toxins in everyone's face. My economy 97 GA16DE Nissan 200sx didn't get mileage like that and our made 115hp from a 1.6lt.

These are excellent motors IMO. They're pretty capable and quite versatile. You can DD them comfortably and get good mileage and take them to the track and still have no issues with reliability.

Dude...fa20 in WRX is 265hp. That is 130hp per liter....and full blown already made stock internal well pass 500whp....

That is why WRX gonna be a better buy than STI.

90% of STI...but with newer engine...faster spool...full boost at 2000rpm...redline at 6700. That is freakishly awesome

Haven't read all 4 pages, but I don't see the Crawford built engine being mentioned.

Fairly sure these race cars had ditched the fa20 before it was even breaking 4-500hp AND before it had ANY parts available for it. I think that'd be the only reasoning.

Get the car some spotlight, while manufacturers get their product out to maintain momentum as the "latest and greatest". I think in another year there will be more FA20 powered cars out there. It's a very capable motor.

I think so far this engine is pretty spectacular considering it was engineered for NA car, the overall price of the BRZ/FRS/GT86, it makes 100 hp per liter, and also todays strict emissions laws. It responds pretty well to very basic NA mods (header + tune = 225-235 at the crank on pump gas, more on E85).

Next, when considering all the FI applications being run by enthusiasts, shops, and tuners it seems pretty durable. Not many shops have blown up engines (there are a few, but not as many as I would expect with all the FI happening) even with some cases of absurdly high power levels.

This engine is still VERY young from a modification stand point. Compare it to other engines in their second year of release (2JZ, EJ207/EJ257, EJ205, 4G63, etc..). No engines, even the very bullet proof engines of the past 30 years (2JZ, 4G63, etc) have been taken very far making power with only 1.5 years of aftermarket development (car released middle of 2012).

I don't think I've seen the Evasive FR-S mentioned in this thread. They're still running the FA20 and it's been used in TA competition like Pike's Peak.

If I remember correctly, they were using a combination of E85 and an HKS supercharger to put out about 400 whp. When they ran 1:49 at Buttonwillow CW13, I believe they were detuned to about 360whp.

ASM's NA S2k is lapping at 57.398. It's 305PS (~301hp)

HKS has a long way to go...

That's because most shops keep it hush hush when they blow up motors. It's not good for sales when Shop XYZ says that they blew a motor using their XYZ Turbosupercharger kit. It *is* good when they claim 500whp on pump gas, with stock internals.

How many people here actually push big power, AND drive it hard?

How many people know how many motors have been swapped into different cars between the major players on this forum? I can tell you that EVERY shop pushing cars hard have blown motors.

I mean, come on. We've two STOCK motors fail on us.

Most shops will showcase their successes, but not their failures. That's why you don't hear of the blown engines.

Reliable FI can be had, but don't expect to be making EJ/2J/SR/4G/etc. levels of power.

And we don't care for the s2k. Go to s2ki where somebody cares. This is about the 86.

Mike was simply saying that the S2k has nearly half the power as HKS' 86 and is faster around the same track.
