Just got a K&N. The flat part goes towards the engine and the ribbed (thicker section) towards the incoming air or bumper if you will right?

All that said, I agree with your last statement that you won't really notice any real power gains without installing decent parts and tuning for your parts and your car specifically.

As for re-oiling and all that nonsense, just buy another high end filter and throw the old one away. The re-oil kit is going to cost you about $15 to $20 already. Then add in your time to do it. And, if it's your only filter, you shouldn't drive without it in the car, so you'll have to wait while it dries and is ready for re-installation. Time alone, it is not worth it for me.

I will probably buy the TRD filter as the K&N's do come with a little too much oil for my liking. However, if the oil is fowling the MAF, just take it out and spray some electronics cleaner to fix the problem when you switch back to a better filter.
The service kit is about $10 on Amazon and works for all of my K&N filters (STI, 1098, Diavel, BRZ). Since you only clean the filters every 10k or so (or sooner if you drive through filth), the bottles last a LONG time.

To clean/oil, take the filter out at night, spray cleaner on in the bath tub, rinse, air dry for about an hour, spray on a light mist of oil and let it hang in the tub overnight. Install in the morning. EZPZ.

You're correct about the CAIs being a waste of money. Seems like most of the dyno comparisons on this site show CAIs usually get +/- a few horsepower. They frequently LOSE power vs the stock box. I went from low to mid 160s whp to 180 with a K&N filter and the Rev Works UEL after tuning. IMO, it's <$40 well spent.

My STI got a K&N short ram intake at around 50,000 miles. I've beaten the hell out of it for the following 40,000 miles in conditions ranging from -19F winters to dust storms. Zero engine issues. If it lets dirt and dust through, it's negligible.

I should have put that short ram on the day I got the car. It made a noticeable difference in throttle response and a minor bump in power. The 'whirr-FOOSH' is a lot louder too. On the BRZ the intake noise is a tad louder in a good way, but nowhere near as big a difference as the STI.

The cleaning crew when I moved out of that apartment. It hasn't been soon enough for me to clean the filter since moving into the house. Now that I have a hose connection I'll probably rinse it outside or use a bucket.

LOL. If she found a bathtub covered in K&N oil she'd be flaming pissed. She does a miraculous job cleaning, but I do my part.

I'm not understanding this... Why would it be your only filter?

I just bought my FR-S, put in a K&N air filter, took out new stock one. When I clean my filter and oil it down the road, I will run the stock filter until the K&N is dry and switch it back. Making sure to always store it back in a bag for next time.

Point mooted!

Or make sure you always have two aftermarket air filters. One in the car and a backup one...
