Well the chief project manager for the twins, Tada-san, has said several times that they plan on and are working on giving it more power. So it's going to happen but the question is when.

Here's the thing, the money you've lost in equity couldve paid for a turbo on the old car. so the reason to buying a new one for the power increase argument just wont fly

Pretty sure I read the same article you did and all he said was that they are developing prototypes. Zero indication that they "plan on giving it more power". Prototypes =/= reality |

I'm sure some day they will make it more powerful, they will also probably make it bigger, and heavier. Thats the way things go in the auto industry and it's always been that way. If you think they will simply make the car more powerful and leave the rest untouched you are going to be dissapointed.
Mk1 GTI, mk1 Miata, old Civics, Datsun Z cars, the first few STIs, BMW M cars, all of these received power boosts over the years yet the originals remain the most desirable. Very few cars truely emprove over the years from an enthusiast point of view. Rx7, Supra and MR2(debatable) are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head that actually had decent revamps. Buy now, you are going to wait at least another two years before the refresh and power bump, power bump that will be questionably substantial to the fa20

By 2015 I would already have my eyes on the production ft-1. If it's all it's cracked out to be I'd rather $60k once than dump $15k+ into my FRS. Seems to be the best answer from toyota for those who want more power. That RC-F doesn't look too bad either.

Toyota could make bank in the US by just bringing in the 86 with no changes. Half the current owners would dump whatever they have, including the OP, for the new shiny. Then, a year later, announce something even shiner, repeat. OP has first-world problems.

I doubt it will be 2015. The contract with Subaru requires the same specs through 2015 and then they are both allowed to do what they want to the car. The 2016 is "rumored" to be 2.5 Litre 280 horsepower... We shall see.

Anyone can play the rumour and waiting game. This relates to everything, enjoy your HD tv now with what's latest and greatest now or wait for a new one based on rumour and speculation. We only live once and have no clue for how long waiting never provides fun or memories. There is ZERO proof or documentation or guarantee of any big changes to the power train waiting is a useless hopefull thing to do that likely will only dissapoint. IMO of course...
