I don't think it's just a French Canadian thing..this side of the country I've heard the words mag, alloys and steelies thrown around when referring to rims. probably an old school thing when the materials used to make the rims were a bigger part of marketing them

Don't worry @Altorhys we still use the term "mags" for wheels here in New Zealand. Mag being the singular. Generally it means alloy wheels rather than steelies here.

We even have a chain of stores here that sell wheels and turbo parts called "Mag and Turbo".

You get to learn the different terms in different countries. For example what the USA calls the "trunk" in a car we call the "boot" here.

BTW, I vote black as well. I think they make the blue look much more aggressive and sporty. Especially if lowered 20mm too.

Oh, and yes, "mags" is the term us French Canadians use when talking about wheels. No idea where it comes from. It's just part of the car culture these days
Mag is short for magnesium as in magnesium alloy. The more expensive alloy wheels are primarily magnesium. Rarely would you use pure magnesium on a road car wheel nowadays, it is dangerously flammable. During the Falklands War a British destroyer constructed mainly of magnesium based alloy caught fur and burned catastrophically, for example. Fireworks that burn intensely white are burning magnesium.

Racing alloys historically were mainly or completely magnesium , nowadays I'm not sure what alloys are used.

A mag wheel is equivalent useage to an alloy or Allie wheel.
