Not sure if this apply to you US folks, but I'll share what I've heard from across the border. The dealer I went to started taking preorders a while ago. The salesman that I talked to said around 10 pre-orders have been made. Personally I thought this was bs, as I talked to another guy on the phone from the same dealer and he said only 2-3 pre-order have been confirmed. Anywho, he said the number of cars they'll be getting depends on the pre-orders. Forgot in which thread, but someone else also mentioned that the dealers DO want you to put down a deposit even if you have a high chance of not buying the car. This is because EVERY, and I repeat EVERY pre-order will mean a car from Japan. Again I'm not sure if he was bsing, or w.e. Another thing on the pricing is that he will charge me MRSP. However after I told him my situation where I've already put down a deposit for the FRS, he promised me a $500 rebate from his own commission. Again, he's a salesman, so not really sure how good his "promise" is. Anywho, this is all the info I've got. Hope it helps you guys.

Wow! Did not imagine this thread would generate such response. I'm going to make some calls Wednesday to dealers within range...out to 100+ miles.

I'll see if I can get a car that way. I really would like a BRZ but as much as I want one I'm not going half way across the country for one. Still holding out that my dealer will come through some how.

Low supply and high demand equals higher prices. Can't say I'm really surprised at the markups, I've known Subaru dealers that won't even sell STIs for MSRP still. Lol there's really no limit to what kind of mark-ups they'll try to pull. We should start a thread and take bets on what the highest priced BRZ will be this summer. My bet is 35k.

I'm doing my best to fight it... and if I can't, I will make sure this forum knows to avoid them.

Damn, feel real bad for you guys. I got on the list early, put down the deposit, and the dealer agreed to selling at invoice. That was only to the first 4 that put deposits down though. Everyone after that is getting it at MSRP. Beyer in Alexandria VA.

Buy it over the Phone/Fax and have it shipped on release day! Shipping should only be $200 or so...

I can't really blame them. If you told me I was only getting 2 cars until November I'd try to get the most I could for them too. I don't see what the incentive is for them to sell them cheap.

Perhaps we can make it part of the Pricing Lottery Page?

I went to my closest Subaru dealer yesterday to see what their deal with the BRZ is. I was told that 7 out of the 17 they have allotted were already spoken for, and that $500 gets me on the list, then when it comes time to order them, they call up and see if I'm still down. If so, they order. If not, I get deposit back. He looked at me kinda funny when I asked about a test drive when they became available. Are some of you guys seriously just ordering blind without sitting in the thing, let alone driving it?

I'd like to get one ASAP based on what I've seen so far, but I'll only really know after a test drive. So if I don't want to pay mark-ups, and want to test the car first, should I just back out now? Do you think dealers will be given a "test car" so we feel comfortable placing orders after driving it? Or are they just banking on this thing being a novelty hot ticket that'll sell to folks that don't really care how it feels to them, or are gambling that they'll be okay with it?

With Scion's pure price, there's really no reason to pay mark-ups on either car, so if that's the way Subaru wants to roll, I'll look elsewhere. Anyone have a preferred dealer in AZ, namely Phoenix~ish?

My thinking is this: Im not looking for a good deal. I'm looking for a fair deal. MSRP isnt great but its fair based on the market. Ive reached out to at least 4 dealers in the DC metro area; all are offering MSRP or x over invoice. Now my main dealer (Fitzgerald) is saying they might do a 1k mark up.

Now based of what other dealers are offering it feels like they are taking advantage of me. I can walk and if I convince 2 people to buy from another dealership, they've already lost 2 sales. They would have been better off, offering me MSRP pricing. If every other maryland dealer is doing MSRP (or below), it makes them looking really bad...

Key word: repeat transactions. Selling cheap - probably not happening either way and it's understandable, jacking up price over MSRP -different thing and an obvious d/b move - tends to screw up dealer reputation unless the dealership already known locally as complete scumbags.
If my dealer tries to rip me off - I'm bleeding them dry on my and wife's next DD and they are never getting my spec.b on trade-in. So there are some incentives for them to behave. How strong they are - depends on local customer base and existing reputation.
