but ramps are safer i guess.
It takes under a second for a car to fall on you if the jack fails. Stability isn't the whole issue. Very occasionally jacks fail suddenly. If you are ok getting killed only the one time then go ahead and risk it. For me dying once is too many times.

NEVER go under ANYTHING lifted on a hydraulic jack without blocking supporting the weight. The risk is small but the consequence is immediate death with no chance of being saved.

This is safe, of course.

Lifting a car on any portable jack, hydraulic or not, requires blocking of the suspended weight.

If the weight of the car remains on the springs fully then there is no danger.

Yes it's all screwed together:

But you can make it like lego if you want. Here is the site I got the info from to make it: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/multi/wood-block.htm (My setup and measurements differ slightly from what is on the site)

As for maxing out the jack it's not too bad:

I can even stack my suv on it, but I got to use blocks on the jack:

Do you remember your measurements?

rhino ramps destroyed my front bumper... you need wood planks to get the car higher or it wont clear

It's actually to never use just a jack to get underneath the car. Jackstands are much MUCH safer.

This. One wheel under the engine bay has saved me once already during a front brake job on my previous car (granted, I didn't need to go under the car, but the wheel minimized the resulting damage when the jack slipped)

What he said. NEVER, not even for a split-second put your head under a car that is not supported with a jack stand. Then again, I do like a strong gene pool so use your own judgement

For each stand:

I had:
13" long 2x4 = 8 pieces
23.5" long 2x4 = 6 pieces
23.5" long 2x10 = 1 piece
