everyone seems forgot about AVO kit, is anyone here with AVO kit having much heat issue as front mounted turbo kits?

You can see the AVO panel filter in this picture. ![]() Remove drilled plastic shroud behind stock intake snorkel for better airflow to radiator. Stock shroud in place. ![]() Stock shroud removed. Shroud is on the bottom near the supertones. ![]() Remove rubber seal on top of engine bay for better cooling. Hot air rises, so remove any restriction for hot air to escape which is this rubber lining. ![]() Another mod you could also do is prop up the base of the hood(closest to window side) with 5-7 spacers, a little bit ghetto.. not too sure if the bonnet will be able to be closed though, I've never tried it. And if you want to spend some money you could probably heat wrap anything close to the turbo(Rad piping) to maybe slightly reduce coolant temp. |

Thanks for all the research.. I've seen some people also cut out the side vent area with a Dremel. What do you think is the most effective mod? I assume hood vents, since like you say, heat rises.

Hmmm I probably wouldn't do hood vents myself due to water ingress when it's rainy unless you like pulley squeal. Oh, just thought of another thing, you could remove the plastic shroud covering the bonnet hinge(to keep out leaves/debris into the engine bay).
Most effective mod, would probably do all those zero-cost mods first and see how you go. Attack the bumper with a dremel for last resort, but definitely remove that shroud covering the front part of the radiator. |

I'm not certain removing certain things like the shroud or the windshield wiper cowl are actually helpful and not detrimental to cooling performance. For example, the base of the windshield is a high pressure area, which when removing the weather stripping or the cowl entirely, would cause air to be sucked in to the engine bay and not expelled. Would be curious to see someone test these approaches.

well considering cars having heat issues even on N/A during track days, I don't think it is a problem just in the FI community. The new Griffon TRD car has a wide air duct on the top side of the FR-S "mouth" area which looks pretty good. I think a angled heat exchanger will minimize blocking the radiator.
I think when it comes to track use, you're in for a completely different world compared to street usage with hard pulls here and there. With air-air IC's, they will never fall below ambient temperatures unless you spray water, so if its 100F out, the IAT is gonna be always 100+. There are pro's and con's with any IC route, but I am going water-air IC and see how that goes during Auto-X. I think the Seibon hood that has one big square vent in the middle is great for front mount turbo's since the placement seems almost dead on. As for the water intrusion issue with the vented hoods, I'll ask some of the PNW local guys if they have issues in our wet region. Perhaps changing out the hood for winter/summer may be a good idea depending on the wet seasons for different regions.

What about the small plastic piece on the hood on the drivers side?
I'd just like to know what they are designed for before taking stuff off I guess the weather strip is to keep water out? But it's pretty hard to angle water down at that angle.

My suspicion, as seen with other cars, is that your cooling capacity actually will decrease by messing with the windshield wiper shroud. The base of the windscreen is a high pressure area, so air will actually get sucked in rather than expelled. I'd be curious to see it tested, however.

I've read about so many turbo kits installed with the stock radiator and no oil cooler that run fine.
My car's being tuned presently, and with the Robispec radiator/oil cooler installed, my tuner is seeing coolant temps of 220 and has yet to do any full power runs. I'm worried....a little. I have the fender garnishes and I'm going to cut those up so they can act as vents, but I'm looking at vented hoods now as mandatory. |
