Guys I know this is random but I really need your help for you who know the law more then I do .

I sold my civic hatch turbo on 11/2012 but never knew about bill of sale I would just open the title and call it a goner .

A month ago I got a letter saying it was in the impound and that I had to pay fees and I have to pay the police .

Now .... The person that had it went 1 year with it on a tag(shows paper work a tag#) I called the MVD and they said it was still under my name . It's been a month now and it's still under my name now here is the main question

What right do I have to go get a title reprint and pay to get the car out ?

As far as I know if they haven't transferred the title in over a year then technically the car still belongs to you. I know the impound will only release the vehicle to the registered owner so the person you sold it to is screwed there. I would go down to mvd and discuss it with them just to cover your butt.

I can go they all the titling regulations and all that stuff. As a finance manager it's my responsibility to handle all title work and legal docs.

what questions should I ask the mvd ?

Hopefully its not trashed if you do get it back. And if the guy never registered it its under your name and legally its yours.

So I went on a bit of a shopping spree during the holidays and will be selling a few things if anyone is interested. I purchased this shift knob off another member and then decided I want something a little heavier. Selling for $80 if anyone here is interested.

I would explain the situation to them and make sure there is no way that the person you sold it to can go back with the original title and try to claim ownership once its out of impound.

I have been through this, I sold one of my Corvettes to a young man who got it impounded. He kept my plate and never returned it so obviously it was still on the car.
I talked to TPD and after the research I did I found it actually is not uncommon to see this issue happen. Normally vehicles like this are found abandoned after being used to run drugs or get to Mexico.
I was able to contact the prior owner's mother who told me what happened and lets just leave it at the buyer was into something illegal. She got me a written statement releasing the vehicle back to me signed by the buyer/her son. I had told the Police I sold it so they needed that and a title in my name which I got from DMV.
I picked up the vehicle from Impound and after holding it a few months that was that.

Since in my case I could find someone to contact I did but all you have to worry about is you trying to contact the buyer. So pick it up from Impound, take it home and store it for 90 days sending out a certified letter to the buyer stating you have the vehicle and they are free to pick it up after paying the impound fee's to you plus any storage fee's if you feel the need.

If you let the car stay there it will just be auctioned off.

Bill of sale, keep a photocopy of the signed over title and keep your plate and turn it in yourself.
