These modern automatics are so good that actual automatic shifting is usually banned and for no good reason. You can easily tell when vehicle technology is superior, it gets banned from racing cars! Torque converter automatics are currently the best transmission available for a road car. DCT are generally inferior in some characteristic such as weight or shift quality. The only issue with the automatic in these cars is the gear ratios selected by Toyota for reasons they have not been candid about. |

Regardless of the nature of AT's in supercars being faster than any human shifter, it completely eliminates the FUN of the car and having full control over it. I'd take those tenths of a second away from the car to have a manual any day. AT's are boring as shit and in our cars case, the gearing makes the AT slower. AT is a great eco car though.

Totally agree here, except I wouldn't say they're boring as shit. Just more boring than the MT. But sacrifices are made sometimes for some of us for various reasons. Most AT guys will agree that MT can be more fun. But there are many upsides to an AT. I still consider myself a MT guy. But I'm driving an AT in this car for reasons that I would like to eliminate eventually. Then I'll go back to MT on a trade-in after another year or two have passed. I think it's safe to say that both transmissions are a good choice depending on circumstance, but that for our cars a MT will be more engaging, if that's what you're into -- plus you get the better ratios. Somebody on this site is planning on fitting a shorter final drive ratio to an automatic car, which would be cheaper and as effective, though the speedo drive would also need adjusting.

My very first automatic car was my '09 Jaguar XF with the excellent ZF 6 spd. I thought I'd be paddle shifting that car all the time but nope, the software is just too good. Now I own a '13 XF AWD supercharged with ZF 8 spd and you just never need to paddle shift that gearbox. My BRZ is a bit of a toy and since I've driven only manual transmissions for 40 years I bought a manual version to acknowledge the old timer way we did things. Of course, I don't miss gapping my points or timing the spark.... |
