My car's at the shop getting mods. When I went there to check on things, there were a bunch of new scratches around the door handle area, obviosly from the shop going in and out of the car. I know I didn't put them there, the car only has 3000 miles on it.

I'm planning on doing whatever I need to fix the scratches, and then I guess waxing the car with some good wax.

I read about coatings but don't know enough about them to spring for the costs.

Dealer covered mine in swirl marks! Not to mention the medium depth scratch the length of the rear quarter. Glad I have some good insight into repairing this blunder!

Buy this: http://www.autogeek.net/optimum-no-rinse-buckets.html
Then follow these directions:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvhyJix0IVs"]Part 1 - How to use a Rinseless Car Wash to wash your car - YouTube[/ame]

I use this system and have not imparted a single swirl mark on my paint (rock chips on my front bumper are a different issue). Wash method is equally as important, if not more important, than the products used. The two bucket method places grit guards in the second, rinse bucket which allows you to remove all soil from used cleaning mitts / sponges before re-soaping and again touching your car.

Using quality microfibers when detailing your car is important, but these towels should NOT be used for soaping / cleaning the car. They lack dirt-trapping pockets meaning any dirt you wipe will be pushed back onto the paint. The rinseless system advocates the use of a grout sponge - specifically the Lake County Blue Grout sponge - because it is soft yet sturdy and provides deep pockets that wick away dirt from the paint surface.

Finally, the absolute best product I've found for removing bugs, dirt and tar is the Detailer's Pro Road Kill Bug scrubber. This sponge is extremely porous and safely removes heavy tars without further scraping them along the paint.

Obviously never...
1. Go to any public use car wash.
2. Allow the dealership to wash your car.

There is a proper etiquette to follow when washing your car, which people have already suggested. The two buckets rule (1 w/ soap & 1 w/ clean water) is a huge help to start with. Swirls & scratches are a problem on most cars - so to a degree it is difficult to not have any at all, even to the smallest scale. It is also important to keep up on the condition of the sponge or whatever you're using to do the washing.

Also, make sure that any microfiber towel you use that touches your car should never bee thrown into a hot dryer - only air dry since the the heat basically compromises the whole purpose of the microfiber ends, which then leads to scratches/swirls, etc.

Every company's paint/clear is complete shit nowadays. Hell, even exotics have orange peel. Blame the fact that they are using water-based instead of lead-based paint. Stupid hippy environmentalists!
