If you're going to pull the cluster out, you're better off going one step further and just popping the housing off and the needles and swap the overlays. Same effect without legal issues, mileage mismatching, etc.

A dealer should be able to re-program the correct mileage on the clusters after a swap, if you show up with both cars with swapped clusters they should have no issues programming both to the correct numbers. Not sure what they charge, but they can definitely do it.

Except the backlighting LEDs are different (amber on BRZ, white on GT86/FR-S)...

But there is no simple way to swap the clusters. Your car will not start if you use an unoriginal/not-programmed-for-your-car cluster.

The combination meter is part of the Immobilizer system, you cannot simply swap them to another vehicle without re-programming the immobilizer for each car.

Wanted to give you guys a heads up before 2 people make their cars undrivable after attempting a swap lol...

I am not sure what will happen if you do this:
1) swap clusters, attempt to start car and realize it will not start
2) swap clusters back to original cars and attempt to start

The immobilizer system may still need to be reprogrammed once it sees an incorrect meter the first time

Subaru hasn't in the past in my experience. If they replace a cluster they note the mileage and put a sticker on the car with the mileage and date the odometer was replaced.

CARNZ thanks for the clarification, I've swapped the older WRX clusters around before the immobilizer came about, but yeah that would definitely make it impossible.

Well, personally if you're going to pull the whole overlays and needles you might as well solder in new colored LEDS (or have someone do it for you) of your choice. There are a handful of Japanese companies that have already done it but it's a fairly expensive option for what it is.

So has anyone actually tried this and can confirm if it works, or what needs to be done to make it work?

Not 100% but if you swap any one of

1. ecu
2. Immobiliser
3. dash cluster

your in for grief as they are a security set, a dealer could do it at a cost but those three need to be coded to each other as i understand it.

dont swap any of those three between cars as you may disable both cars till recoded, i dont think techstream can do it as you appear to need codes provided by a third party due security.

it appears its possible to swap all three as a set say from a wrecked vehicle but i dont guarantee it

I am curious to see if someone has done this ?

can the car be started without the cluster ? I am looking to replace it with a Aim Data logger like the MXL or MXG cluster.

Not sure what's involved.

Hello,
I found EU style GT86 instrument cluster that is in metric, not in imperial , so that would save same amount as reprogramming, and still could sell my won unit, and brake even. ( that would be so good)

But does any one try it, now i don't exactly want to deal with immobilizer problem.

If yes, do any reprogramming is needed ?

http://gt86-brz.clubitalia.forumcomm...et/?t=56682286

By reading this thread, it looks like new meter will pair with your car, it would be nice to get new instrument cluster, but it's too expensive

Yes it appears it is possible to pair in a NEW guage cluster that has never been used before into the car.

But swapping in a used guage cluster from another car may not be easy it may require dealer to recode security or may not be possible unless you swap in the dash\imobilser module and ecu from other vehicle.

Maybe talk to local toyota\subaru dealer to confirm if using second hand parts.
