Insurance rates are based on aggregate data of vehicle and brand history. Not only demographic but rate of accidents. Remember that there are greater volumes of scions than Subarus, which based on sheer numbers means there's more accidents in scion vehicles, which drives up rates for all models

Same deal. There are certain cars that get rated up due to their audiences and accident histories. I would wager that GTI's, Mustangs, Camaros, Civic Si's, WRX's and Mazda Speeds are on a "list" with these companies. Then they go next to your age, driving history, and other things about you. That is called underwriting. There is more to it than that but that's the general idea. Me at 34 with no speeding tickets or accidents is also helping me. But the type of car is very important as is the brand. It's like car stereotyping. It's not exactly "fair", but in a way it is if that makes sense.

In a sense it IS fair because they're distributing the cost of repairing/replacing the car amongst all owners (who are insured).

On another topic, more related to the actual topic of the thread , if I don't have access to a form of heated air that can reach the back end of my car... how difficult will it be to debadge the Subaru letters? Will liberal applications of "goo gone" and elbow grease work?

Leave it out in the sun, use some dental floss, goo gone, clean and wax, and you're done. No need for a heat gun (although it is easier, but will still require the additional clean-up steps).

I've always used a hair dryer and goo gone. I wouldn't mess with a heat gun. That and some fishing line or dental floss should do the trick.

All true and I get the concepts behind it but at face value it seems like madness. My original theory was that since the 86 is such a new vehicle there isn't a huge data set for it and thus they haven't added it to their list, so to speak.

I suspect it will get there soon given the popularity of the cars and the particular shenanigans they encourage (bro do you even drift?).

I live in an apartment with a detached garage, unfortunately there is no power outlet for me to plug in a hair dryer, hence the inability to apply heat... I was hoping to do this tonight as I got the itch to do it... just no way to heat it up... Guess I will be doing this tomorrow around lunch time.

I did mine with no heat, floss, and some goo gone. That said, it was summer, and 80 out. Not sure where you are, but it's cold as Hell here, if you're in the same boat you might want to wait.

Austin, TX. It's 8:45pm, sun down, and it's comfortable to be outside in jeans and a t-shirt. Probably in the high 50's low 60's atm.

Not much of loss. But the benefits are far more. Navigation, heated seats, climate control, leather, LED DRL's, Spoiler, better audio system, and slightly better suspension. Plus my insurance went down a good bit. I can handle that for $40 more a month. My car payment is about what people would pay for a 12,000 mile lease for a year. It's all good here.

My wife? That's a different story. She is sick of the whole car bit.
