Sucks. I took a turn doing under 10 mph & slid out when I hit a patch of compacted snow. I bought winter tires 2 days later. Today, I drove to work with the snow tires, got all sorts of funny looks, & was the first one to my office; & now everyone here is calling me crazy. (Now I know I can wait to come in later on days like today, 6+ inches) Spun the tires a few times, only accelerating from lights or turning with some snow on the road, but night & day vs. the HPs.

With all of the threads about snow tires on this forum, I'm simply amazed that one doesn't take it to heart.

Glad you're safe OP and I hope everyone that's sitting on the fence about snow tires has learned their lesson here.

I kept telling myself next week, one week after another, which is completely my fault. Driving in western NY: it's not a matter of it, it's a matter of when.

You drove over a patch of snow. NO WAY.

This is correct, but the most important factor is the tires. Even with minimum Torque and steering input, one of the rear wheel can slip, and loose traction. If it does at 40MPH and Snow on the road....you are doomed.

Sorry to hear Op. I hope you can salvage it, put a stroker engine in it with SC

Lesson learned I guess.
This.

Knowing there are people like this on the road makes me really angry. You're taking chances with everyone's life not just your own.

Okay this fucking scares the shit out of me. I'm buying my BRZ from Clint in Colorado and driving it back to SoCal around March or April. I just want to get out of snow country intact.

My condolences, dude... at least you walked away from it. On a brighter note, the car still looks mad sexy

It was still snowing in late May here last year and even into June just south of us. Hoping this year is not a repeat, but December is already way up for snowfall vs last year.

I might just buy a cheap used car and live with it. Never needed winter tires in NYC and don't think I'm staying in Rochester for next winter. Hopefully, I'll be in Cali by then?

And yup with everyone's comments. Let this be a hard lesson learned from me to push everyone that's on the fence about getting snow tires to get them.

Edit: A little update. The car is not estimated by the shop yet, but my insurance rep was talking to guy at the tow lot and the guy there said it might not be a total lost.

You will know the closer you get to the date of purchase, but you should be fine if there's nothing on the I-70 and it hasn't snowed in the week or two prior.

Your backup plan is to take the I-25 south into NM, then west.

... or just ship the car.

We still had snow in mid-April last year. Granted it was just the odd snow spurt here and there, and what fell quickly melted away again, but it happens. If there's bad weather when you pick your car up (either in Denver or somewhere on your route) then maybe consider just grabbing some snow tyres for the trip. You don't even need to buy another set of wheels really-- just have a tyre place (if you have rubber shipped to the dealer, I'm sure they can install it for you as well) put the new rubber on your stockers, throw the Primacies in the back, and swap / sell the snows when you finish your trip. It will probably cost you the same as staying put and waiting for the snow to melt anyway. It's not impossible to drive RWD cars in the snow-- you just need the right rubber and appropriate driving technique. AWD alone won't do anything for you-- even if you can accelerate quicker than other cars, all cars are AWD when they're braking... if you've got no grip you've got no grip. If you're driving without grip you're going to have an accident: there's no cheating physics.
