The V6 mustang (yeah hate on the suspension all you will) makes over 300 horse and can be had brand spanking new off the lot for 6-7k less than this car. It may not be able to take a corner as fast (safely) but you can do a lot of stupid things in a car thats fast in a straight line. For a car that can be purchased for less than 20k new right now that thing is quick - 0-60 in 5.3. Then the Gen Coupe 2.0T pretty inexpensive for a base model 0-60 in 5.7. They could've gone a lot faster and still targeted the same audience - other companies certainly have.

Not to mention the huge used car market, where young people could, and do, get V8's all day long for under $10k.

Tada did not want to use forced induction (turbo/supercharger) and the engine had to be naturally aspirated, and a boxer so the car would sit very low and the engine could sit further back. The car also had to be RWD and have exceptionally good handling.

This is why the FT86 is not 300hp and does not make 300ft lbs of torque.

History (sales, reception by the critics and enthusiasts alike) has proven that he is right. I am sure we will see a more powerful version as Tada has already stated it is coming at some point. But even then I expect it to be more of a modest bump in power and nothing earth shattering.

I often consider that the FR-S and BRZ will be a one generation and done product. I personally don't want this to be the case, but I think it has be a possibility. Instead of increasing the output of this engine and possibly upgrading transmission and brakes, I think it much more likely that Toyota will finally build a successor to the Supra (or resurrect the Celica) as their sports car offering....and Subaru will either develop another sports car/coupe solo or simply stay with turbo-charged, all AWD vehicles, with the STi remaining as their flagship performance car.

If it plays out like this, our cars will become relatively unique in the wild, but maintaining/repairing them will become a royal bitch.
They could do a lot worse than resurrect the Celica AllTrac with modern technology. The FR-S platform would make a fine starting point. Relatively spacious engine bay with independent rear suspension is a good place to start. FR-S AllTrac anybody?

FR-S AllTrac anybody?
Oh God Yes! Shut up and take my money!

Since I live in the mountains of north Idaho, that would be perfect. I keep telling myself that if there was an AWD sports coupe, with a manual tranny, at least 9lb/HP, for under $50k, it'd be the perfect car I'm looking for.

I'm not sure how you extrapolated "younger, less experienced drivers" to mean only 16 year olds.

Actually the average Scion buyer is in their low to mid 30s and Toyota knows that. Their target is more late 20s-early 30s. That was their strategy back when they started in 2001-2002 and yet they still have the youngest average buyer age (low 30's according to several news agencies like Forbes and CNN.

Not this car. Originally it was planned to cost several thousand less as well. Before the car was launched, development costs created a price hike and along with it an upward shift in the target market.

Article from ~3.5 years ago.

The car is also likely to be marketed to older buyers than originally planned, too. The head of Toyota’s newly created sports vehicle department, Tetsuya Tada, told Autocar that his team had increased the target age group by 10 years, from the 30s to 40s, after market research revealed that fewer younger buyers would opt for the sleek coupé than first thought.

I have an Eclipse GSX. It's one of the few cars ever made to meet that description. I have been waiting for something to replace it for the longest time and the FR-S/BRZ is the closest I have found but I'll obviously lose the AWD and some power.

I know lots of people who want a new AWD sports coupe but for some stupid reason, manufacturers don't seem to want to make one. But I might be able to get by with RWD...
