I appreciate this line of pondering...I'll throw this thought in there (and it's been shared before as well):
I often consider that the FR-S and BRZ will be a one generation and done product. I personally don't want this to be the case, but I think it has be a possibility. Instead of increasing the output of this engine and possibly upgrading transmission and brakes, I think it much more likely that Toyota will finally build a successor to the Supra (or resurrect the Celica) as their sports car offering....and Subaru will either develop another sports car/coupe solo or simply stay with turbo-charged, all AWD vehicles, with the STi remaining as their flagship performance car. If it plays out like this, our cars will become relatively unique in the wild, but maintaining/repairing them will become a royal bitch.

I saw a short quote in a tuner magazine that Toyota has recently said that sometime in the middle of the 2015 model year there will be more power coming. It will not be a turbo.
The bomb was also dropped that at some point there will be a redesign that will almost certainly not have a flat four.

I don't see why anyone thinks they will move to a 2.5L engine in the FR-S. if that happens, it will be many, MANY years from now. Like next generation, 7-10 years from now. I doubt the FR-S will even have a second generation, honestly.
If anything, I see a turbo FR-S coming out... next generation... with the same FA20 motor.. And I'd ping that at around a 10% chance right now |

I have to agree with @MightyMeeple . I think this car is very similar to a Miata, with niche market targets, it will be a "one of a kind" car, and it ends there. Sure both manufacturer can learn and use from this platform for other models in their line up (WRX/STI/Supra/Celica Etc.). I suppose they can make a limited low production of a "freak" model with a 2.5 or a turbo/sc package, but that will be a stretch.
I believe they will have slightly different cosmetic packages and perhaps suspension upgrades, but I do not see this car getting a drastic change in the coming years. The Japanese BRZ sports package cars are limited production with interior/suspension/aero upgrades and thats it.

A 2010-2013 Corvette Grand Sport is my 2nd choice if the FRS doesn't become fully irresistible. I told myself from the beginning that as much as I liked everything about the FRS (since 2008ish when the concept appeared and this site began) I wasn't going to buy it until a more powerful option came out with at least 250hp. Having driven a 300HP exige, and a 2011 corvette, and owned a Mazdaspeed6, I know I like a nice power/weight ratio.
Time will tell. Time will tell. Going to finish paying off my student loans first. One more year. |

Even at $25k, that's not something a typical 16 year old is going to go out and be able to afford.
