Joining the NASA

So I joined the NASA today and I am planning in getting a physical tomorrow to get my provisional racing license. I don't have any racing experience so any help would be appreciated in what I need to do next to start racing in the NASA.

On January 11th I'm going to the NJMP HPDE event in which will be my first time on a dedicated road course with an instructor.

Wheel to wheel racing, eh? And you've never done any DEs? I'd personally wait until doing a few DEs before going in like that. Keep in mind, damage to your car is much, much more likely when racing than when just doing a DE or two, and the safety requirements are much higher. What car are you planning to race?

Thought you meant this NASA. I'm disappointed.

Honestly, I'm not sure what car i want to race. I designed the Monte Carlo to be somewhat of a hybrid between being able to handle well for the car it is and to be able to go to the drag strip if i wanted. Its also a show car. The car is heavily modified and by no means a DD. The brz on the other hand is my daily drive and if i were to wreck the car it would be nearly impossible for me to replace it. If anything class one and class 2 is generally pretty safe and they don't require any extra safety equipment from what i read till you get into the higher classes.

I don't think you intend to get into wheel to wheel racing.

Ill chip in with what I know but for full reference, go on the NASA home page under the forms section and read the racing and TT rules. Essentially, you will need to compete a minimum number of events with an instructor in the car to obtain your provisional license at which point you have to complete a few more events without incident and then submit all the necessary paperwork for that region.

Or if you want, you can pop about $10, 000 for a 4 day racing school out at Miller Motorsports Park and get your license by the end.

Or if you're just talking about getting on track and learning to drive as fast and safely as possible, just sign up for HPDEs. No worrying about times, positioning or when the next time your car gets hit.

Are you just doing HPDE1/driving school, or racing school?

I would recommend 3 things.

- Camber bolts (it'll save u tire wear on the outer edges under hard cornering)
- Brake fluid (prevent your fluid from boiling, and pedal going to the floor)
- Brake (race) pads (prevents your pads from overheating, and you being unable to stop.

You'll notice a common theme of reducing cost and/or failure here. I'd recommend you NOT modify anything else. As you develop as a driver, your preferences will change, and you'll know what and how you want the car to change. That's when you should carefully choose mods.

Ok thanks for that info. From my understanding I need to complete hpde 4 before I can get a competition license. But what is the provisional race license? Also, the Monte Carlo already has the things you listed above.

Oh, different car. In that case, read up on tire pressures, and have fun!

You'll need to go through HPDE1 through HPDE4. Then you can go to race school and get a provisional license. Once you successfully complete a few races without incident with your provisional license, you'll get a full license.

At least, that's how it works out here.

Thanks mike. I'm probably going to try both cars on the track to see which one I like better. I just wanted to let you know that the Monte Carlo is track ready while the brz is not at the moment. I will post my results after my first day at the track.

Both NASA and SCCA require roll cages to go W2W racing. Recommend you buy a car that is already prepared if plan to go W2W. You'll save money in the long run.
