Oil slightly overfilled on last oil change any concern?

My vehicle is garaged for the winter and while hooking up the battery tender this morning I decided to pull the dipstick.

It appears the oil change just before storage is slightly over filled. Most garage floors are slightly uphill so the oil level would probably show slightly higher on perfectly level ground. Right now with a cold engine in around freezing point temp the level is maybe 1\4" above the top hole. I am hoping this is insignificant as the car doesn't come out till April and I don't have oil draining equipment. Don't want the crank to whip the oil into a froth. Am I overly paranoid?

Please let's hear some qualified opinions.

Well, I'm not claiming to be "qualified", but my opinion is that there is nothing to worry about.

Come spring, and after you check the dipstick on level ground and if it still reads a bit over, then drain (or suck) out a bit, if that makes you feel better.

It will sleep OK with a tad overfilled ....

And I suppose I will suck it out with a straw? It will be 5 months after the oil change so the dealer probably will be a pain in the ass about it. Don't plan on buying tools to fixer dealer sloppiness.

I am handy but fairly new to car stuff in terms of tools.

Relax, your car is fine. My BRZ is over filled that much at the moment, no issues. I got a little heavy handed with the 1 gallon container, think I filled to 6 qts instead of 5.7.

I looked for but cannot locate a picture that shows (clearly) the angle of the dip stick in the oil pan. It dips into the oil pan at a shallow angle. So: 1/4 inch on the dipstick = much less in terms of oil level.

I did about 30 oil changes on my 04 WRX. That car was "4.8 qts" capacity with filter. I always dumped 5 qts in and called it good. Never an issue in 190k miles.

I would not attempt to remove excess oil unless I was > 0.5 qt over filled.

Actually, it would be quite handy, especially since the oil filter is up top. Change the oil & filter and never have to get under the car.

I don't intend to do DIY oil changes as its hard to compete with $59 + tx at the dealer, with no disposal issues. The sucker does seem cool though. If life was less busy I'd do all kinds of stuff to the vehicle.

I think I'm qualified to say that...You can relax. When I used to work at a Toyota Dealer in service, we would slightly overfill the cars because if it's topped off exactly, the oil filter will hold some oil -- customers would come back and complain and be like "You didn't fill the oil all the way", (but this is because the oil filter held some of the oil).

Chill.. You're fine.. Especially after the car sits for awhile and gravity returns more oil to the pan.. A little overfill ain't going to hurt anything..
